Cirkus that rig is coming along very nicely, I have also been thinking about mounting the shocks in an angle.
Congratulations, hope to see the maiden flight soon!

By the way, what scorpion motor is that?

Its a 5035-410 (look on page 3)

The shocks work well at an angle, but I think I need to mount two more vertical. The angled ones keep the mount centered, and the outboard mounts dampen the roll of the mount. I think together they will work best.

I'm shooting for next weekend for a basic maiden, without a payload and no video Rx. Just tuning, hover duration testing, and that sort of stuff.

The WooKong-H arrived today, so I got right into installing things. I haven't seen very many WK-H's on the internet so here's a couple unboxing pics as well...

The main stuff

Protecting wires

GPS and status LED. The LED is canted so I can see it while standing next to it and also while its overhead. I will be making a silicone mold to blend it into and hold it firmly to the boom.

The WK-H, the Rx, and a few other bits of excitement, will go in here. It will be nicely padded and organized, of course.

Here, you can see the front legs are the first version, and the rear legs are the (hopefully) final version, giving more height and clearance under the gimbal.

I know the box looks a bit off right now, but there's a plan and it won't look quite right until I get all the parts in place, so don't flame me yet...

That's all for tonight. Tomorrow, I get some more G10 plate material to cut the other half of the front gear legs. Also, I will be replacing the hardware used to assemble the legs. Right now it is held together with 8-32 bolts, through a nylon spacer, and held with nylock nuts. I will be replacing that with stainless 8-32 countersunk flathead screws from both sides and the nylon spacers will be replaced by aluminum threaded spacers. It should polish the looks of the gear a lot.

OK, so I started today by swapping out the old landing gear hardware for the new stuff, see below...

Old hardware

Old hardware installed

New hardware was less than 1/2 the weight, plus it just looks so much better...

Old and new...

Then I just had to clean up some wiring. All these wires are making me crazy, time to get some of them under control!

I had to make some extentions to get the wires routed where I wanted. It's more trouble but in the end it's worth it.

Hey, that looks factory!

All worth it in the end...

Getting some idea of how these will mount when it gets the foam liner...

I ended up doing this to the collective servos, throttle lead, rudder servo, and Spektrum sat lead.

Rudder servo lead runs down and away from GPS antenna and lead, just a bit more separation for good time's sake.

be sure you use cable ties to hold down GPS mount to the boom, there are two slots made for this use.

I'm actually going a different route with that. It will have a silicone molded fairing to hold it.

I didn't get as much done today that shows, mostly tedious wiring and little stuff.

I did get the silicone fairing molded around the GPS mount. I used Sugru. If you don't know what it is, look up www.sugru.com it's awesome.

I also redid the gimbal electronics. Mostly because I found some nicer looking LED voltage displays and switches.

Old and new

There are two batteries now, a 2-cell lipo for the Picloc, and a 3-cell for the video tx.

Hey, that Sugru stuff is cool, thanks! Out of curiousity, how many little packets did it take to make the fairing? Are you going to have to redo it any time you change the tail boom?

Yeah, Sugru is my new favorite stuff on Earth! It took 2 of the individual packets to do the fairing. And yes, it's semi permanent but can be removed without harming the components. If I have to replace the boom, I have had a serious failure and will likely be replacing many other parts as well, so no issues cutting it off at that point.

My transmitter took one packet of orange.

Auto mode and hold switch

Flight mode and gyro switch

Also, I had concerns about plugging in my servos incorrectly to the Picloc and shorting it because it has 4 rows of pins vs. 3 rows, so I covered the last row. I stripped off the yellow signal wire from the wire you see in the background, cut it in sections and pulled out the wire to make little hollow tubes. Once I had them all on, I cut them flush. No more shorting possibility.

To all:

I have received several PM's about the electronic enclosure I made for the gimbal. To address a few things:

1. Will you sell me one? No, not at this time. I don't have the spare time since my heli isn't finished yet. I might (MIGHT) sell the boxes precut on the CNC machine, with the switches and displays included for you to build your own, since the cutting of the squares are pretty much impossible to do by hand.

2. Then will you provide a parts list where I can purchase the same parts? Absolutely

3. Will you post a step by step build on how you put everything together? Sure, I have a long weekend this weekend so maybe I can knock out a how-to.

Even though the whole purpose of doing AP (besides the enjoyment of it) is to make some money, I don't really care to make money selling this idea. I'd rather just share the info, and if you like my idea well enough to use it on your own project, thats cool enough for me.

Thanks Cirkus for addressing this.

IF you do decide to sell the boxes precut with the parts, put me in line for (2) to start.

Back to the Post.......

It is great to see you are constantly looking to better you designs for your rig. I am excited to see the progression and the flight of this beauty......Great job.
