Well now I need new packs for the 550, the expense never ends in this hobby. I guess they're up there on cycles and I've just worn them out. I haven't got a log but I wouldn't be surprised if they had 500 each on them.
Time to investigate Optipower. Cheers Sutty

Okay, consider them investigated. Already know that they're good, but I didn't know quite how expensive they were. Anyway, £400 later, for 4 x 5000 6S 30C packs for the 550, and I managed to try them today.
The difference to my tired packs is astonishing. Not blaming my old packs, they've done their duty, but honestly the diffference is mind blowing. I have been flying with ever weakening packs without realising they had seeen better days because it had crept up on me. The 550 today felt like when I put a 2221-6 in the 450. Lot of money for 4 packs, but what do they say, there's no pockets in a shroud. Only 2 arrived, 2 on back order, but no big deal. Meant at least that I didn't have to do all my EC5 soldering on one day. Fun day today. Cheers Sutty

Ok, quick update.
I received m Alex Moss SimpleBGC control board and IMU yesterday. Installed and started programming it today. So far so good. Did one test flight, much better! Charging all the batterys up now, doing my final battery now, the 3s 850mah that I am using for the board directly. Weather is a bit of a bitch today as we have rain storms pushing thru and are expected to have them for most of the week following. Oh well, nice to have the rain, been pretty wet this year, for a change. It sure is nice having all the screens available to you to tune this thing. The key here is to do one step at a time, see what the change is like on the graph. Correct each step until you can get each step individually as smooth as possible. During each step, using the graph, once you get the graph nice and smooth, there is a slider to expand the graph so you can dial it in really smooth. Once you get it smooth, move to the next step and repeat. Do this for each step, not trying to do too much, such as for example, when adjusted P value, only do P value, don't mess with I or D values. Once P value is set, then adjust I value. Finish with D value. Changes to I or D will affect P. Fine tune all values until nice and smooth on the graph. I know it sounds like a lot, but I've only messed with it for an hour now, unlike my last board where I blew off weeks! If I can get a break in the rain I'll continue with my flight tests and fine tuning, but so far no surprises. Jerry, don't know if you are home yet and had a chance to mess around with yours, but I sure hope you have more success with yours than I did with mine. Seems my tilt esc is weak or has some issue. Research shows I'm not the only one. Still, I figure it's a worthwhile buy as the gimbal itself is very well made. I'm happy with it. Even with the new board I only have $400 tied up in it. At that price it's compatible with other gimbals that have licensed versions of the board. That's still 1/2 the price of DJI's new GoPro gimbal which is just too new and I'm sure will have plenty of bugs to work out. Though, I would dearly love to have one!

Rain let up so I braved the wind, about 13mph to 23mph gusts!
Second test was much better! Still not perfect yet, but so much closer. Haven't received my new motor yet. Pretty much convinced that I need more torque. Will find out when I get the new larger motor. Power setting on tilt is at 94 right now, motor is only slightly warm. Will try more power next time, which means redoing PID again. Practice makes perfect. Think Sutty can testify as to how long it took me to figure out BeastX! Becoming happier and happier!

A lot of speedflying lately, even competing on fly-ins and such. Won a race from a Goblin 770 with a Pyro 800 a few weeks ago, lol. One small problem though, my Pyro 700 is not up to the task anymore, or my flying has improved (or perhaps my balls are getting bigger...). Hitting between 230 en 240 km/h consistently now. Headspeed (governed) drops from 1900 RPM to 1750 RPM at full pitch runs. That's at 5500 Watt peak / 130 Amps, as the logs show. Kontronik says it's only 4500 Watts peak, so I'm pushing it too hard, or at least hard enough, without any spare power.
To make a long story short, a 750 competition series with a Kosmik 200 is on it's way. That combo should hold 2000 RPM or so, it is about twice as powerful. And I also got a custom (smaller) speedcanopy with decals from Jan Henseleit, it's not on his site but if you email him you can buy one, a frame stiffener, a larger pinon, a heat resistant main gear and some other goodies to make it do what it was made for.

I have finally picked up a few spares for the 450 from the LHS
Didn't have main shafts (which I need), and didn't have tail output shafts, which I wanted as spares, because I have installed my last one (which is the old one I needed to shim up - common fix I later found out). So I still require some main shafts, another almost full rebuild, as I busted the MG'd Hi-Tec servo's again, and got the tail bearings and other bits caked in mud. So swapping back to the repaired Align DS415M cyclic servo's again, and hoping another LHS has the main shafts tomorrow. Hope this will be back in the air by weekend, want to get out and enjoy some of this fine weather we have been having recently Was hoping to get a DFC head, but that will have to wait a little longer Sorry Sutt, give me a few more weeks Not been on the SIM lately, so I am going to take this re-introduction to flying duties a little slower Hmmm, now I look at the Map, FL's is only an hour away??? Don't think the other LHS will have them after checking the website

Well, as usual stuff happened. Got a call about work, so didn't have the time to drive to FL's on Thursday. Friday also working, so called the other LHS to check stock and the guy who knew where they would be was on holiday, so had to wait till Saturday. Gave them a call Saturday AM, they were in stock, so drove down yesterday afternoon to pick some up. Had a friend visit from Aussie land last night, so I'm a little delicate today and Jack is here also, so I will finally get started on it tonight
Just in time for the thunderstorms after a 2 week heatwave....Just my luck!

Well, this ain't heli related, but pretty exciting stuff, for me at least.
Was checking the Bronco football schedule and found out I'm only going to be off work for 5 lousy games this season. So, to remedy this, I decided it was about damn time to get rid of my dumb ass IPhone 3 so I could watch the games, ( don't tell the boss ), at work when not busy. I picked up a Galaxy s4!!! What a phone! Got to spend some time with it now to figure it all out. Only paid $100 for it! Got $100 trade in for the IPhone. Had to sign another 2 year contract, but what the hell.

Well, it's Android, rather than Apple, so that's positive straight off the bat. It'll do all sorts of novel things, like work with equipment made by other manufacturers!!
All I need to do now is persuade my employers that the iPhone is a POS and get me back on something that can actually communicate with non-Apple products as well!

@ Tom: welcome to the "i"- free world. Been using Note 2 since January and sold off my tablet as I realized that I wasn't using it any more. Just got another one for my wife, and she's talking about getting rid of her iPad now, incredible.
@ Luke: that's not what iPhone is for, you have simply misplaced your expectations. True believers use it for conjuring the spirit of Steve Jobs. Word is the new and upcoming version with a built-in DLP projector will do the hologram of Steve's head that will talk you through the reasons why you're locked out of the real world, in a ultra modern, R2D2 to princes Leia style.

ROFL.
There was me thinking it would be a handy device that could talk to other devices that I own....and that other people own! If I needed a diatribe on how wonderful Steve Jobs was and how his legacy lives on, I'd go and speak to my "m8" who only buys things with an Apple logo on them. I can get a real life person lecturing me then, not a hologram! Everything he owns talks to everything else he owns.....mind you, his ability to communicate with the outside world is almost zero....

Finally, got some money in my pocket, no child to look after, enough spares to get the 450 airbourne, and finished work reasonably early, so just enough energy and time left to get started

Sutty! Not the BB word Had you down as a Jeremy Kyle man?
Some progress actually made now. Pulled the bits off to clean all the mud off the frame/motor and ESC. Servo's replaced and wired up, 2 HT servo gears are broken Also found a very notchy main shaft bearing, when I pulled the main block out. Hoping it will sort out the weird/slight drop in HS when I was inverted. Pulled the boom mounting block, replaced the front umbrella gear and front drive pulley/speed up gear. All back in place, but needs to be tightened once I put the boom back in. I will get onto the tail and head installation tomorrow. Tail blade assembly needs total deconstruction, and mud cleaned out of the blade grips. Noticed the swash movement seemed a little stiff also, so will probably take rest of my spare time 2m to complete. Have treated myself to the align tail pitch arm upgrade (the one that comes complete with a new side plate). Hoping that might improve the slight twitch on the tail. However, I'm still looking at that long flimsy metal tail pushrod with some contempt. Hope I can keep it airbourne long enough to do the carbon rod upgrade this time. If I'm still left wanting after I install the new pitch arm! Hopefully, I'll be ready for a test on Friday, but might not get time till Saturday due to work/family.

It has absolutely been too little heli'ing for me lately.
My Protos has been on the bench for ages, waiting to get set up with a FBL controller. I have a 450 that needs some parts to complete the build and the 250 has been my only flier for a long time. But NO MORE. The same day I came home from a very nice vacation in Thailand, there was a reopening sale on one of the Norwegian hobbyshops. Feeling almost drunk of the jetlag, I pulled the trigger on a Trex 500e super combo and one of those nano sized Nine Eagles Solo Pro 126 helis. I've also gotten around to make my Protos flyable again albeit not as FBL yet. Tomorrow it's time to get to the field an try it out and with some luck the postman will deliver two brand new toys for me as well

Hey Sutty, don't suppose I can check something with you if not working.
How stiff is the steel ball in the swashplate on your 450? Would you be so helpful to detach all links to the swashplate and give it a wiggle (or anyone else if you have a 450PRO to hand!!). I can definately feel some resistance in mine, so I'm wondering if it's something to do with repeatedly busting metal gear servo's, or part of the inverted HS problem??? I've checked all pitch and flybar links (not that you know what one of those is anymore ). One of the pitch links feels slightly stiffer than the other, but I feel it is free moving enough not to be an issue. It just seems a little suspicious to me, if not, maybe just something to clarify before getting airbourne again. Cheers

All links removed. Was expecting it to be loose and wobbly, as it has soooo many flights on it. I was surprised to find it was stiff. much stiffer than I would have hoped for or expected. Put a little silicone spray on, and it improved, but certainly it would still hold in any position I put it, and not wobble. This is the tightest I have ever noticed a swash ball, and it flies perfectly well, though I haven't properly 3Dd it for a while.
Tomorrow I will convert it back to a 3D crazy machine, I am sick of not having a 450, to throw in the air at a whim. When there is a GPS RTH for the Naza-H, then I will buy that and start over with the FPV lark on the 450. Cheers Sutty
