Default Tail bearing spinning in tail plate?

Today I noticed a noise while flying. I suspected it was something from the tail because had tighten the tail belt the night before.

I'll rewind to the day before, I was doing some FFF, diving down, leveling out, then pulling up and banking hard. I had done this a few times, going faster and faster. The last time I did it the heli seemed to skip/hop as I was banking it. The only thing I could think of was the tail belt was slipping. Am I correct? Could it be something else?

So I wrapped it up for the day and that night I tightened the belt. Now I can still hold the motor and try and turn tail blades and get the belt to jump, but it was tighter than before.

So now tonight I pulled apart the tail and the blade side bearing is not very tight in the metal side plate. I am trying some green loctite/bearing retainer, to see if it will hold. I will order some new bearings and side plates tonight, but prob won't see them till Monday

Which retainer compound are you using?

If you are having trouble with the tail bearings slipping in their plates then I would go with epoxy instead of glue (CA or retainer compound). I haven't had an issue, but if I did that is what I would do.

Never had my belt skip either.

Ok, I just use some JBQuick now instead

Could it be something else causing the skip? Can you get your belt to skip on the bench if hold the motor and force the tail around?

I'll see if I can get some one to video tape it when I am flying.

If the motor belt is loose it can skip and cause what might seem like power and tail issues.

"Ok, I just use some JBQuick now instead"

JB Weld, or QuickWeld is the correct thing to use.

I used it when I installed the bearings in the aluminum tail case side plates to begin with. I now have more time on the aluminum side plates than the original CF side plates.

Don't forget to lube those bearings!

Good call Bob. I followed the info I found here to run the main belt loose, maybe I'll try and tighten up the main belt.

AH Clem, Cool. I did not do this on the original build as I thought it was not needed with the metal side plates.

Thanks guys.

Yeah, I use JB-Weld for those bearings, CA isn't enough to hold them over time as they take a massive amount of abuse.

On a side note, I had to replace the bearings in my CF side plates yesterday and was able to press out the bearing without damage and reuse the side plates. The bearings were secure in the side plates ...

Good to know! So JBwelding them in seemed to fix the noise I was hearing (must have been the bearing moving in the tail plate. I think the bearing had a little damage as it seems looser (more play) than before.

I have new side plates and some ceramic bearing (listed in the other thread) coming on Monday so I'll just swap them out. I'll JBweld them from now on, even if you can't get the bearings out the plate, the plates are cheap enough that it doesn't matter.

Thanks again!

So if a guy uses JB Weld to fix the bearings in the tail plates is there a way to then remove the bearings when they need replaced?

I was able to successfully press mine out the other day without damaging the side plates, so I would say yes.

If you only "tacked" them in I bet you could get them out NP. The metal side plates are $8, so you could just toss them if it doesn't come out

I use a toothpick to make a small bead of JBWeld around the entire circumference of the flange bearing, press it in, and wipe off the excess.
