Default Motor Shaft came out during flight.......

So I put a pack on my 550 today. Simple, but effective setup. 6S, Talon 90, Viper VSH6013 1300kv motor. It runs ok. Not a crazy power setup but plenty responsive for what it is.

I noticed some slight bogging in flight. I was on medium headspeed so I thought nothing of it. I run it 2250,2350,2450 Castle governed on 550mm blades.

I land and as i'm giving it a once over I notice something off looking at my pinion. It looks like its touching my battery support. I thought it the pinion set screw had loosened and the pinion rode up on the shaft.

Upon further inspection, I noticed it was actually the shaft that had moved up inside the can! What in the world?

Motor is almost brand new. Have 8-9 flights on it. Been rock solid. I always take temps when I land. Motor has never seen more than 130 degrees after landing. No weird smells, no burn marks, solder joints and motor plugs are good.

Set screws at bottom of motor I loctite'd myself with red loctite. Shaft still was able to creep up. Is it bad bearings, bad shaft? Using straight tooth pinion so there is no vertical force being applied to the shaft. Now that the motor is cool, the shaft is not movable by hand. There is no play in the bearings, etc.

What could have caused this? I don't remember there being a C-clip retainer either. Maybe thats an issue?

Maybe your set screw missed the flat spot on the shaft?

I believe this probably the culprit. I use a file to put a reference mark on the end of the shaft to verify the flat spot location in reference to the grub screw. Then also use pliers to try to rock the shaft after assembly to be sure that the grub is solid in the motor endplate.. Be careful not mar the shaft with the pliers.
