Tail control failure
Howdy.
Today I finally had the iKON near dialed on my Mini despite crazy winds. I noticed a slight 'chirp' with maximum pitch and thought maybe the front belt tension was a little loose, and pulled the motor/y plate forward. The chirping seemed somewhat worse, and I noticed in a hover the next flight. Later that flight, I lost tail control (piro/tail crash) and crashed into some knee high grass, slightly bending my feathering shaft and main shaft. Interestingly, I don't know why I lost the tail. My DS95i is working normally, wasn't too hot, servo/gryo corrections normal immediately after the crash, and I was even able to get in a quick hover (and noticed a LOT of vibes) after giving the heli a once-over. Causes? I'm not too experienced with belt drives and am thinking I may have lost the belt on the tail/rearmost pulley temporarily. After looking the heli over, when I run the drivetrain backwards, the belt wants to slip off the L side of the pulley now, but is dead center with normal motion. I'm not sure if this is normal. Is my belt over/under tensioned? Other things to check for? Chirping related to failure, or just a dry belt or bad bearing, etc? I got away lucky this time, but I'd like to have a good idea what I may need to fix. Thanks Freaks! Addendum: Probably unrelated, but I also broke the USB plug off today a few flights prior to the incident. The plug fell into the unit sometime from when it broke and now when I'm looking at it. Probably didn't short anything, but I guess you never know... I'll be pulling the unit and seeing what I need to do with the plug too for rebuild. |

Mine was dead quite for the first 70 flights or so. Then I started to notice a "chirp" on harder collective moves. I added a bit of the Scorpion bearing oil to the Y bracket bearing, it got quiter, but still a small chirp... So I added some to the idle wheel closest to the pinion, dead quite again. Seems they need a bit of TLC on those power pulleys.

Tail control failure
Update: I had a failure about 12 flights into the chirping. Not sure what failed first, but the Y bearing failed, and the front tensioner pulley bearing failed and melted through the mount. The belt completely de-tensioned and fell off. I 'autoed' down well enough to not break anything else.
After replacing both bearings, the chirp is gone. The tail has been fine. I double checked the servo horn was centered and nothing was binding, but didnt replace or change anything major, so the tail failure is still a mystery.
