Question Xxtreme thrust bearings

How many who built the Xxtreme built the heli as per manual with the open ball races facing outwards letting the grease go on rotation.

I built mine as per every other heli I have built with the balls facing inwards thus keeping the grease in the cups.

I know Dave Dahl mentioned this in another thread but wondered what the majority went with now they have them.??

Which is the correct way.

I mounted them as the manual shows them, after Dave explained what happens when they are mounted the other way I totally understand why I see balls fall out on my other machines.

another thing I was thinking about. If you have the cup inward then the grease will be caught in the cup and wont reach the race on which the balls are rolling. With the cup outward like shown in the manual all the grease slings out on the race and with the rolling of the bearings will get the grease on the places where it matters.
I couldnt find any info on either way of installing them. Probably mainly because they arent used much in situation where you have the centripetal acceleration.

On two occasions now, the latest with my Synergy E7, I have had a loose ball rolling in my thrust bearings. It could be due to the way I fly who knows.

I will pull my XXtreme head apart after 25-50 flights and see how much grease is left with how they are installed now.

Ok, be interested to know.

I do actually grease both sides and always have so maye this will make a difference?? The inside, cupped bit I pack loads into and the other side I run a line around in the groove.

I'm swapping over all machines to this method as I have had balls falling out on all machines from all times.

I think the "Cup to hold grease" was from Finless bobs videos back when first T-rex 450 came out or something but perhaps it was wrong all the time.
I'm testing new way for sure.

Me too.

Dave and Kyle have been flying this thing for almost a year and his experience with this machine and explanation is plenty good enough for me.

I must be very lucky as I have never had any such trouble with raced balls coming out of any heli in 5 years in the hobby.

Certainly nice to hear a different version of events though.

I will check these after each session and watch for any malfunctioning.

Why has it only been brought up now with the xxtreme if it was an issue before too?

In all fairness I dont think I ever heard an issue about these before but it obviously happens.

I'd be interested to know how much grease is thrown out after the first couple of flights. On a new heli I always notice trails of grease on the main and tail blades due to some being thrown out but that could be as I put too much in?

Can someone link me to Dave's explanation please

Minicopter has the thrust bearings shown facing outwards in their manuals as well.

Thanks for that link. It does make sense.

I would not dismantle a head of ones I have already installed but on future builds I will do them that way.

Doing them this way does it mean they need to be greased more often?
