Cool We want EagleTree in Linux!

I know there's already a thread on RCGroups about getting a Linux version going of the EagleTree software, but why can't we have one here, too?

I'm a Linux user (Ubuntu 9.04) and would very much like a version of the software I can run on my laptop in Linux. I have Windows loaded, but EagleTree and Reflex are the only two things I use it for. I use an Acer One netbook (10") that makes a great companion to the EagleTree at the field.

Would it be any easier to just make Linux compatible USB drivers so Wine or a virtual machine could be used? Then I'm guessing the software wouldn't need a complete redo. However I'm not really a software guy so I wouldn't know.

The idea has been talked about for a few years now. Any progress?

Default Try some Wine

Have you tried runing it under Wine? The Eagletree software is pretty well written Windows code. I would be surprised if it would not run under Wine on Ubuntu.

Wine has problems with drivers and external device communication. I doubt it'd work.

It does not work with wine (at least, I could not get it to detect the eLogger). As far as I know, wine does not support USB devices.

I use XP and Ubuntu 8.10 on my desktop. My laptop is Vista and that's where my Eagle Tree software is. If there was a Linux version of the software I'd blow all evidence of Windows off the laptop and run nothing but Ubuntu 9.04.

On my ubuntu 9.04 I could install the 7.70 beta with wine but it doesn't recognise the logger when I plug it into the USB Interface.

It would probably work with VMware under Linux (everything else does) however that is more trouble than most people want to go through. I use the Phoenix Flight Sim and the Castle Creations USB Link in Linux through VMware.

VMware is essentially a computer emulator. You run it on Linux, and then you can boot Windows (or Linux or BSD or whatever) virtually with the VMware program. It recently got DirectX support and has great USB support too. The only catch is if you want to use the free VMware Player you need to create your VMX and other files manually or with some tool. I use VMware Workstation so I have not tried going the free route with making my own files.
