Default Best price:performance servo choice for Protos 500

Hello guys,

I'm about to purchase my first non-micro heli and have decided to go with the Protos! I'm pretty clueless when it comes to servos and most of my searching came up with a lot of outdated or Mini P/700/800 threads. What some of the better "bang for your buck" cyclic and tail servos for the Protos 500?

I was looking at the MKS DS966A+ with DS760P, but the DS9660A+ are out of stock everywhere.

Thanks for your time,
Dustin

I tend to use Futaba 9650's for this size heli. Although they have nylon gears they do fail safe in a crash and are easy and cheap to replace. There is no slop in the gear chain either where there is with equivalent MKS and Align servos. IMHO.

Don't skimp on the tail servo-- I run the full size Futaba BLS251 and it is rock solid.

I'm using DS9660A+ cyclic and DS760 on tail. Perfect!

I run Futaba 9650's for Cyclic and the S9254 for the tail. I'm just a casual pilot so no need for HV for me. I run the 9650's at 6v and then a stepdown regulator in-line with the S9254. Got all four servos from the HF boards for a song.

Running Hitec hs-5245mg on cyclic with well over 500 flights on them. Had a Savox 1290 on the tail for a while but for my laid back flying style it was overkill.

Now just using a Hyperion mini tail servo I found on sale.

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions!

Would I be okay going with the Futaba S9650s for the cyclic and BK DS-7005HV for the tail? How do the S9650 compared to MKS DS-9660A+?

IIRC the Futabas have plastic gears? That would be a big no-no for me on cyclic servos, especially as a beginner. IIRC you can swap the gears for MKS metal gears, but a set is >20$.

The Hitecs Kavic recommended have a solid reputation. Over here many are flying Savöx SH-1350 (same as Align DS 510 I think). I got the MKS for a good price, so I went with them. Another alternative are Hyperion DS16.

For tail most are running a std size servo (Futaba 9254 for example), best bang for the buck.

Here´s a search with results for the same question:

Okay, then I guess those are out of the question.

How about Savöx SH-1350 for cyclic and Savöx SH-1290MG for the tail? Is the BK DS-7005HV not good? It seems to get good reviews from Goblin owners, but I don't see many people using them on the Protos. Will I need an external BEC?

Thanks again,
Dustin

I use the BK servo on the tail and its the best I've had.. I just took the 9254 off and it was a solid servo on my Protos.. But I got tired of replacing servo gears in the 9650's after a hard landing. Good luck with your choices

I have the 5245s and a 9254 on mine and no complaints.

Kavic, I am checking out this Servo for the cyclic on my Protos 500 Built. Are you still comfortable with the DH16GCD as a good cyclic servo for the Protos. Are they a drop in ie no cutting etc and do they come with horns that fit and work in the Protos 500??
