800 extreme on 12s or 14s

I am thinking about the extreme 800 combo with the servos, escv, motor and fbl from Mikado usa. I am a sport only flier. Can I run this kit on 12s or 14 s packs?

The higher the voltage, the more torque.

It's good to reduce the current for the same power.

My car has a v6 in it, but I don't disconnect 1 spark plug wire because I don't need the power.

This is a heavy heli, and if you do more then hover, you want 14s. A 12s System will run hot, and it will be very hard on your batteries.

Just go 14s.

If you are thinking that you want to share packs with another heli, you can still do that, just get another 2s pack and wire it in.

Not a good idea to go 12S on the XXtreme. I think the key point is the weight and blade size involved. If you are going to get one of the biggest mainstream rc heli's out there I would go with a minimum of the standard power system, ie. motor, ESC and batteries. The only area I might go "light" is with 4400mah packs instead of 5000. Additionally, under sizing the motor will cause higher amp spikes.

I fly a Logo 800 and my friend flys a Thunder Tiger e820, both on 14s. The Scorpion motors get hot. It seems no matter if you are hovering or hammering the motor runs hot. I would hate to see how hot it would get on 12s. I asked the same question when I bought mine and Ronald Thomas said 14s because it needed the power. You will stress 12s packs too much in my opinion. Higher volts=Lower amps=cooler motor and speed control.

This beast should be run on 16s in my opinion. Smack 813s on 14s does not give good flight time .... Maybe less than 4 min.

I built mine up on 16s and I absolutely love it. I'm glad I did. I'm not a hard core pilot yet so it may be a little overkill but the system runs flawlessly. I'm getting to where I can fly big air harder and more aggressive, flips, rolls inverted and some hard punch outs. This thing doesn't even blink at anything I've asked it yet. 1900 and the motor and ecs come down cool, so to speak. Motor 150ish I think and ecs 90-95deg.

sport flying is fine on 12s. stay below 1600rpm and everything should run great

Not advised. As other's (and Dave Dahl posted in another thread) this heli needs 14s.

This heli needs 14s for what? the guys says he is a sport flyer. I would never put 12s in my xxtreme but I'm a hard 3d guy.

If you want to get into it, the heli really NEEDS 16s to really pound it. 14s will run hot and suffers from short flight times at full tilt, hence why 12s is a no go. However guys are running 700's on 6s so there is no reason the Xxtreme doesn't run on 12s and you can be happy with it If you understand the limitations.

I would always suggest 14s if possible but its a nice slow flyer on 12s

That's a good point re the 6S on 700. However, the rpm's for that setup are usually around 1,000 and clearly they are not "sport" flying as the maneuvers may be the same but it requires a lot of collective control and skill. I would suggest that 12S is definitely an option but with an rpm limitation of around 1,400-1,500 and an assumption that the pilot will have to have already developed some collective management skills. This clearly would not be a standard sport setup. The good news is despite the limited number of pinions the usual ones could be used as the rpm will be lower. I think this setup will also require an ESC that does freewheeling such as YGE or Kosmik.
