Default Tail chatter

Anyone having tail chatter issues? My chatter is quite bad with a cross wind or in bank turn situations. Manual says 84/84 for gain on DX6i, I've dropped to 66 on FM1 and still have it. I might keep going but want to see if anybody else has had this issue or what DX6i settings you are running.

Thanks

Steve

If you're running in governor mode, turn that gain down. If it's too high, it will cause the motor over/undershoot too much which will mess with the tail.

Maybe try adjusting pot 3 on bx, I had the same thing happen and it actually turned out to be my aileron axis gain, I lowered pots 1 and 2 and it went away. I thought initially it was coming from the tail, but it was them damn cyclics twitching during hard left turns. Also double check you're tail rotor end points.

It was doing it in non gov setup as well. I can't see it being beastx pots, cyclic is a touch lazy if anything, doubt it's getting too 'gainy' on me. Going to move ball on tail servo. I'll report ASAP but weather might hold me up. Thanks for your input!

Well??? What's the verdict?

If I can fix a tiny 450x tail servo, you can fix the chatter!

Check your Parameters Menu on the AR7200Bx as well, make sure your settings aren't too high as well!

(Put your purse down!)

even tho some say it isn't needed , did you try to add a shim to the tail to get some of that play out? just something that couldn't hurt to try to fix your problem

With one shim there is no play, it's bang on. Will test fly tonight with the new servo ball position.

Shimmed and moved ball, still chattering. I have the teeniest bit of play, going to leave it, don't want binding. Time for some experimenting this weekend.

Hmm... Maybe the servo has some issues?

Time to give Horizon a call!

Same here. Other than removing the play, absolutely no other difference was observed in flight by me.

Sorry for the dumb question but what the heck does 'tail chatter' mean?

I have only heard most tail problems referred to as 'blow-out' (= fails to hold position and may swing around, generally too low tail gain). 'fast wag' (= too much tail gain), 'slow wag' (= not enough tail gain), or 'intermittent tail twitches' (= static problems with belts, control binding, or tail bearing(s) problems). Lots of other tail related problems/solutions but those are the most common ones imho.

'Chatter' to me sounds like more of a sound than an action. Maybe a loose gear noise caused by incorrect gear meshing. The only time I've heard this is when the rear tail case was incorrectly positioned too far out. On the 550x it generally just need to be pushed in until you feel full contact, then pulled out a tiny bit (~1.0-1.5mm).

Cheers,
TomC

Not anymore once I got my tail and governor gains under control. Never really had it much to begin with, though.

While I cannot actually see the heli in this video, it seems to me you are getting a fast tail wag which means that you have too much tail gain. In the old days, before fbl, we used to put our heli's into a full speed dive and adjusted the tail gain until it did not get a wag. Usually worked great in all conditions after that.

Could also be a gov gain setting thing like jade says.

In some cases taking the tail servo arm in a hole or two and then re-adjusting endpoints also helped allow for the highest, most stable gains.

Again, almost impossible to properly diagnose over the web so try to get some local heli help.

Cheers,
TomC
