There's also the issue of the changing battery voltage as it discharges. It will start at 4.2V, so a 3.7V LED would be overloaded at first. It's possible the LED would survive for a while, but that extra voltage and the associated extra current is likely to gradually damage the LED until it fails. With a resistor, the LED can adjust its voltage and current as needed.

ok here are my findings please advise
1 , for 2.5 vf and 25ma ,calculator showed 68ohms 1/4w resistor 2 , for 3.8 vf and 25ma ,calculator showed 18ohms 1/4w resistor for both if i use 4 smd's in parallel and with each smd a resistor if i wana use different vf smd simply change the resistor ???? |

If you're running the same LEDs (color and part number) in parallel, you can treat them like one higher-powered LED and only use one resistor. In that case, you'd keep the voltage the same but multiply the current by the number of parallel LEDs when calculating the resistance. If doing so would unduly complicate the placement of the foil traces, it would be better to use one resistor per LED. Quote:

is carbon resistors are okay instead of using surfadce mount resistors because they come in a package of 5000 pieces ,too much for beginner project |

If you shop around, you should be able to find SMD resistors in much smaller quantities. For example, I know you can get them in single quantities at DigiKey. I don't know how much international shipping would be for you though.

One more thing: I'd recommend that you use a tiny bit of epoxy to adhere the resistors to the blades, since they are significantly larger than an SMD.

Do you guys CA the batteries down in addition to using heat shrink. While testing my battery flew out of the heat shrink. Im using the heat shrink kavic posted on this thread from amainhobbies. I'm wondering if I need to just apply the heat shrink better but I'll probably CA it to be safe.
Also, thanks for all the information on here guys. This has been easier than I thought.

I use double sided tape underneath my batteries, then shrinkwrap tightly. Never had a problem.

1206 LED's
Hey are any of you guys using 1206 LED's and if so do they need resistors. The data sheet also did not say what the viewing angle is. I really want to try and make a set of night blades. Any infor wod great.

solder led to resistors
Jonathan Ott,
Can you show us a close-up photo or your led to resistor soldering. im using 3528 led and 1206 resistors but I don't understand how you soldered them between just two strips of copper tape. Did you use small piece of copper tape between long strips Thanks for you help. Doug |

DIY Night blades
I just watched a great YouTube series by Gus Petraits last night. I swear I've seen his profile picture somewhere on HF, Foghorn Leghorn. I didn't realize I had to use a 2 part clear coat on a nitro powered heli. I was able to get a gallon of Finish1 FC720 with catalyst at Sherwin Williams for $75. Should be able to do 100 blades and canopies with that. Hopefully I can get my buds to chip in and I can make their blades and clear their canopies. We gotta lot of nitro at our fielding Dayton. All my supplies should be here by Monday and I can start my winter project.
My first fun fly EVER was IRCHA. I've been wanting a night rig ever since. Gonna be sweet! [ame]http://youtu.be/FEGmvcYM4U0[/ame] Sent using Otto correct.

Had a single 350ma cell shift a bit under the shrink wrap with the standard indoor variety double sided tape. The old Hurricane 550 got a bit wobbly round the head bits. |
