Default 450M vs Turnigy 2218H

Hello guys

Just wandering if anyone has had experience with both motors? Wanting to replace my align one as it has seen better days and i have been reading mostly good things about the turnigy. Another option is of course the 2221-8. Look forward to reading what everyone has to say

I've never run a "brand name" motor, but I'm running a 2218H now and its by far the best of the cheapies I've tried. It does run hot though, but tons of power. Data logging shows peaks past 50 amps and over 600W on Gens Ace 2200 55C packs, hover current is around 16-18 amps. Fresh pack headspeed is 3300 rpm with a 13T pinion at 85% throttle. A 12T on the 150T main is probably optimum for torque and would lower the heat, but I haven't tried it yet.

It just barely passes the "hold a finger on it for 5 seconds" after a flight test, so I'm not running back to back flights on it. Other than that and the fact that I had to grind the flat spot on the shaft higher for the pinion it seems like good performance for the money.

I've actually had experience with all 3 motors and this would be how I rate them:

1) 450M - Pretty strong, good quality, low vibrations, runs on 35A ESC, sport flying (A bit expensive)
2) 2218H - Very strong, OK quality, low to med vibrations, runs on 40A ESC, good 3D (Best Value IMO)
3) 2221-8 - Super strong, excellent quality, low vibrations, runs on 50A ESC, heavy 3D (Expensive but it is easily rebuilt at a cheap cost)

So it is really up to you as to what you want to do. They all have a place.

I should note that the order I presented these in doesn't have anything to do with a ranking. I was just trying to point out that they each have a place depending on the flying style.....

Hmmm...

Well i definitely want more power. But, should i go 6S then (bat's are old and need replacing anyway)?

Seeing as the motor is going to cost me $50, may as well get whats best then. Oh has anyone tried aligns new 6s motor?

Why not add the 2215 into the list too? And I dont mean to hikack this thread but has anyone found replacement shafts for the turnigy typhoon 2215 motors yet? I just recieved mine in the the mail yesterday and have read that a replacement shaft is no where to be found. Nothing is wrong with my motor(havent spooled it up yet though) I just want to be ready incase this shaft breaks

The 2215 is more sedate than the 2218. I have actually owned the 2215 but preferred the 450M cause it looked nicer (couldn't tell ANY difference in the air). Its nice and efficient and i had a few crashes with it and nothing broke Just make sure you take it apart and make sure there is no play and that the grub screw is locktited

Hi Andrew.
What motor did you end up going with?
I am looking at putting together a 450 PRO myself.
Thanks.

I went with the 2218H purely based on price. However, i am going to be buying a pro v2 and swap the motor out straight for a 6s setup (the scorpion 2010kv). Flight times are about 1.5 min less with the 2218H compared to the 2218H btw If you wanna fly forever, get the 2215H and put an 11 tooth pinion on it and enjoy 7-8min flights (sport flying)

450M vs Turnigy 2218H??

+1 for 450M if you want to fly 3D
+1 for 2218H if you want to fly for longer time.

2218H is a $13.00 motor.
2215H is a $14.00 motor.
If I wanted spares on a $13.00 motor I'd just buy 3 of them.
Maybe I could make 1 good out of 2 bad.

Don't expect much in the way of parts, other than you may get lucky
and one day HK will list a spare shaft for a $13.00 motor. Doubtful.
