Default try these LED strips

i am about to finish soldering the wires to a 9v batt. (yes i know, 1 end only so i can turn it off!) these are: 9" LED blue strip lamp. i got them at harbor freight today. i need 2 more to put on the blades. this one is one the tail. it is used for (real) cars to illuminate the trunk or dash and stuff. can i put a 9v batt. on a 450's blades or is that too unsafe? thanks and tell me what you think.

Post a pic of that strip...

and FTR you know the blades need to be balanced to very exact tolerances right? Completely ignoring the aerodynamics issues a 9V battery will cause what are you planning on using to counterbalance the weight of the battery.

Where exactly are you wanting to glue the battery? To the blade itself?!?!

I wonder if they could have gotten any lower resolution on those photos. All I see are pixelated blurs.

Those LED strips are most likely the waterproof variety. They will totally disrupt the airflow over 325mm blades. And please dont try to attach 9v batteries to your blades.

These are some good batteries for DIY night blades:

Well, here's a couple things to think about first:

#1, a 450 class heli probably doesn't have enough room to mount a 9V battery anywhere on the head. even if it does, you have to worry about balance issues and the fact that at speed, the bettery will weigh probably 10X what it does in your hand which is going to lower your flight times considerably (if not certainly, it's very likely anyway)

#2, soldering either lead on would only make sense if it were rechargeable since you'd have to swap them out every 3-4 flights.

#3, why pay $15 for a strip set from Harbor Freight when you can buy 1M strips from HK for like $3-$5? Especially since you get one continuous meter of the stuff per box and you can cut it to length as needed. I have a couple strands and they work better than any of the brand-named Xerogear stuff I have as well.

#4, why not look into a small 2S lipo instead? 7.4V would power up a 12V strip easy and it's at an intensity you can actually see. If you get up to the full power at night on some of those LED's, you might as well be flying a big rainbow blob because you can't see defined portions of the airframe.

#5, any reason you aren't willing to try soldering up your own DIY night blades? I know they take some work, but they're pretty entertaining and they give you another skill to work on (which is always a good/fun thing for me at least).

All in all, you can do whatever pleases you. A 9V will work and it probably wouldn't be a terrible idea on a much larger machine, but it's still an awfully heavy battery for even a 550+ machine.

Umm, Skunkworx? Did you notice hes 15? And has a join date of Aug 2012?

Cut the kid a break already. Anyways, I gave him a rack of links for doing DIY night blades the right way. Now all he has to do is get a pencil tip soldering iron and hopefully not short out those tiny 1s lipos.

Shorting out a tiny lipo is not good. Ask me how I know.
