people always ask me that -- how far can it fly away ?

Well for me, it can fly away till it is lost !!

they can definitely fly till out of eyesight.. jusy a tiny dot in the sky.. and still apparently controllable.. however it gets really hard to actualyl see which way to control it to get it back I might add !!

I doubt you can find a hill in Kent high enough to bother it. Although it's not the only factor, model helis are grossly over-powered compared to real ones so I bet they are capable of reaching altitudes measured in thousands not hundreds of feet - ignoring the practical aspects, as you said.

Funny that, I get the same. I just say "further away than I can see it at".

Yup...same 3 questions for me.....how much does it cost, how fast will it go and how far way will it go?

I know where you are coming from though DS....at what point can it simply not fly any higher? When does the air get too thin?

I think you'd have to be above 15,000ft or so. You get short of breath around there, though, so I'm sure you'd be fine on any of the highest hills you get.

Would be a cool experiment though. Get a mid to large-sized heli and take it up mountain by mountain and see how high in the atmosphere you could actually fly.

I believe the current heli record is quite old and goes to a beefed up Squirrel (AS350 I believe) that landed on Mt. Everest. I don't see a technical reason why a properly beefed up model couldn't beat that by a decent margin.

+1 Jerry, it was an AS350. I would agree too, that with the power-to-weight that most models have, it should be possible to beat that. Any 'freaks fancy an Everset expedition with a heli in their backpack??
