AP2000i and cheap gyros?
I can't justify another $300 for AIL/ELE gyros - has anyone tried the $35/45 varieties (telebee, e-flite, etc.) with the AP2000i for flybarless? Some of the inexpensive gyros have heading hold also. I have already converted to manual flybarless (still have tail gyro :0) ).

I don't recall anyone posting that they had used such as you've listed. If they hold reasonably well on a tail they may work out for you. You don't specifically need HH, in any case. In HH, the heli won't be flying like you're used to. In rate, it will feel just like there's a flybar on it.
