Default Video Monitor

I'm in the works of getting the 900 mhz system from Ready Made FBV along with the eagle tree tracking system.

It seems the only thing missing is what type/brand video monitoring unit to get. I know don't want the goggles but what is the best T.V. style to use?

Start researching posts and websites about the Black/Blue screens of death. Some of the little TV's will stop displaying static at a certain level and then you have nothing.

I have used a USB video converter on my laptop (Pinnacle Dazzle) and it will display pure static image without drop out.

"pure static image"?? Does that mean it works with only a still photo or actual live feed from moving heli???

When you have a live feed from the heli and you are hovering right next to you the video will be crystal clear. As you fly away the image will degrade as the signal from the heli gets weaker due to distance, as the video becomes poor with static some TV's will decide that the signal is so weak and bad it will turn it's screen blue or black and then you have nothing to see at all (or hear). This is not good because you will instantly be lost and crash somewhere that you can't see. This YouTube explains it very well:

Seems like I might have seen this one at Wal Mart a while back.

I had read that using a composite to VGA or USB adapter wouldn't work because of the latency, but I picked up one of these

http://www.heliproz.com/prodinfo.asp?number=561616

from Heliproz. It's finicky as heck but when it works there is no discernible latency. So for me, just drifting around with my quad, it would have worked just fine. Maybe if you can find a reliable capture adapter you could use your laptop as a primary display. I have a little monitor I got from FPV as my primary, but I record everything on my laptop, sort of like a Black Box. If nothing remarkable happens during a flight I just delete the file.

I did a lot of looking and reading about the Haier monitors. The ones I found touted the same "no black/blue" screen and the $$ is reasonable.

Now with optimal conditions with a 900 mhz system what would be the distance before the static would lead to a failure

I know it may be a silly questions... but I'm not an engineer by any means and just want to get the best answers before I get myself into $$$ to buy new heli's and equip after a crash.

Depends on too many factors to tell you

First what mw (power) vTx

Second what antennas on vTx and vRx

Third how much RF interference is in the area

Many have flown 900mhz miles like 10 miles. So ideal everything is around 5-15miles.

I have the Haier 7" sitting next to me right now, it black screens all the time, but instantly comes back. It will go down really far in static before you lose it. But range is an impossible question to answer, it depends on everything, but with good antennas you could get miles out of 900 Mhz.

either a unity gain stick antenna on the heli and a patch on the ground, or CP cloverleafs on both ends will work really well for you. Stay at least 500 Mw or above no matter what you go with....

I guess the range question was kinda open-ended with all the variables that are out there.

What I did get from this... the range is just fine for anyone buzzing around a park or open fields (where most of us fly)....

I have been using a Vizio 32" LCD TV from Walmart (around 250.00) as my primary monitor. Works great. I can see greater detail plus it is great for other bystanders to view what I see. Just need to shade the monitor. The only drawback is needing a AC power source for the TV (eg. extension cord, generator, or inverter). My video range last longer than my TX range since I started using IBCrazy's Cloverleaf Video Antenna.
