Default 455 kv G3/scorpion 160 opto, timing in ext gov mode?

Got the 700xf 455 G3 with the scorpion 160 opto esc in my Rush Evo. Im running in external gov mode with vortex egov.

When I run at the default 5 deg timing, the motor runs very hot. At 15 deg, it runs a lot cooler.

What setting would be considered optimum for this combination? What effect does raising the timing further have? (I can adjust timing up to 30 deg)

all ESCs are different, and the Scorpion ESC appears to operate different than many others (primarily Kontronik and Castle Creations). In this case, it’s best to find the optimal settings for the ESC and in this case, sounds like the Scorpion operates best at the higher-motor timing (since the PWM is also locked at 8kHz). I don’t have any personal experience with the Scorpion series, but there are many customer flying this combination with great success, and 15 typically the best overall-balance on ESCs for Outrunners. Increasing the timing further increases the power consumption and in most scenarios, actually increases the temperature of the motor (more power consumed) - so not sure why the Scorpion would run cooler, other than it’s potentially producing a more compatible-control signal with the motor and their hardware
