Default Raptor G4 OS 105 Review Update

For those who have been asking about my G4 (that I recently updated to the G4.1 specs) and its new OS engine. Here is an update: The G4.1 has run 6 gallons of fuel through the new OS 105HZ-R now. So on to the questions about power... yeah, holy cow it has power. This thing just pulls and pulls. I'm actually finding myself "accidentally :-)" not managing collective the way I should on a nitro machine because it pulls through anything. This Raptor airframe and this motor seem to be made for each other. I had run another engine in this machine previously and it flew great, very precise, locked in and light as a feather, but with this engine things got serious.

I am running 30% nitro in it, my elevation is approx. 4500ft, and the ambient temps are hovering between 14F and 22F degrees where I fly lately. I've got the high needle now just under 1.5 turns out and the mid needle at .75 turns out. The motor comes down with the center of the back plate at about 150 degrees right now after a fairly aggressive 8.5 minute flight. I can obviously go leaner and increase the power but I am just fine leaving it where it is for now. I'm flying 700mm blades on it right now and have the governor on the CGY750 set at 2100. I will definitely try the 115 tooth gear as well but right now am running the 111 tooth main gear. I'm running +/- 14 degrees of collective on the machine right now as well as setting the CGY750 at 10 degrees of static cyclic. Climb outs are ballistic and the snappy rolls, flips and piros are a blast.

I'm still amazed at this airframe design. It is so big and commanding in the air and yet is lighter than any other 90 sized nitro I've owned or picked up. It has been through many crashes and I'm still using the original main shaft and I've never had to buy frames for a crash. The swash control system is bullet proof and sets up at a perfect mechanical neutral without any tweaking... talk about making FBL control setup a breeze.

Does everyone remember what it is like to auto a 90 class nitro? This machine just floats and floats in auto rotation, you can do whatever you want. I am having such a great time flying nitro again. When I head out to the flight line the other pilots cringe because they know I'm going to use every minute I can wring out of the thing before they get a turn again. If you really want to progress as a pilot I think one of the very best things you can do is fly nitro. When you are learning new things the long flight times mean that you get your wobbly legged part of the flight out of the way and then get a solid 6-7 minutes of progress under your belt.

Is nitro dead?

No... not even close!

Wow, thanks for the review Adam! I'm getting restless waiting for my g4.1 to come! I'm gonna run the 105 and Hatori pipe. Probably gonna try 15% nitro for a while. Was the build straight forward? Any missing pieces? Thanks again!

Build was a straight forward as it gets. You can put this machine together in an evening no problem. With the way the cyclic linkage sets up at perfect mechanical/servo neutral it is a dream and takes about 30 seconds :-) You just turn the radio on, insert the rods into the linkages and frame holes, center the servos at mid stick with zero sub trim, tighten the servo horns and you are done.

as i see adam, that you have another t-piece between your motor and the headertank?
do you use him for filling?

because i have a normal filter there and not the t-filter,so i must tank trough the another t-piece you have there.......but when i refill the tank there is so much compres that i must take out the fuelline and there is a deep sssssssssss........

so there is a lot of air that must come out.is it better too refille there were you have the t-filter?

Filter T is where the fuel goes in.
Return line T piece is where the air gets out post flight and refuelling.

Yes Borgo, exactly what Rossk said. I use the "t" at the filter to pump fuel into the tank and I open the plug at the other "t" to relieve the air pressure.
