Choose the make of transmitter most people in your club use, that way you can always get help if you need it.

Different modes equate to the configuration of your Aileron – Elevator – Rudder – Throttle.

Mode 1 is Elevator and Rudder on left stick and Throttle and Aileron on right stick.

Mode 2 is Throttle and Rudder on left stick and Aileron and Elevator on right stick.

You also have mode 3 & 4.

Mode 2 is most similar to real helicopters and is the most popular.

Good advice above.
I'd also always recommend, with regards to radio and charging equipment, buy beyond what you think your current needs are if it is within your means.

You can fly a heli just fine with a 6ch like a DX6i. Add an iKON or BD 3SX at some point, you'll appreciate more channels to be able to access all 3 flight banks (iKON), switch between flight modes in a 3SX and activate bailout, etc...

I'd go with a min of 7ch radio, preferable 8+ on the radio side..

Like I mentioned, over buy on the charger too, you'll be glad you did if you stay in the hobby.

Since you're going to get smothered in opinions anyway, I'll start...

Great and relatively speaking inexpensive charging solution:

As for radio, I'd go for a DX7S or DX8.

I'm sure you already know, this is all about balancing capabilities vs budget constraints.
