Battery tray, rubber bands and spacing
Using the battery tray system, are the rubber bands still required?
Also noted in post #4, it looks like the straps to hold the packs in place will hit the chassis spacers. I don't have any additional tubing on the chassis spacers (the plastic rods) Getting ready for final setup. ... Rob Last edited by Voyager; 04-03-2014 at 02:48 PM.. Reason: more info |

If you have the v1 tray with no pin then yes. the v2 and v3 have a pin that goes across the front and holds it in so no rubber bands required.

Not to sidetrack this thread. But what are you guys using with the V3 batt tray to hold the batts in place? Everything I try balls up when they hit the tubing around the frame supports?

I found an old post where Gerd says to cut up a 26 or 27" bicycle intertube and use that to hold the batteries on the tray.

No silicone on spacers, using the tray velcro strap on each batt velcro on batts no issues.

Re: Battery tray, rubber bands and spacing
Attach the plate with velcro or double side tape then use bicycle tubing its handy to hold the packs and keep the wires and balance connector away from the frames.

Thanks guys! I am removing the silicone tubing on the plastic spacers. The tire strap method still hangs up on these and it rolls the rubber back over on itself. Total pia. I prefer the velcro strap method anyways. As when I balance charge the 14s packs as 14s packs, I can unstrap one of the balance leads if needed.

I happened to have an old inner tube but it's way too small, it will not stretch anywhere near what it would need to fit even the smallest packs. It must be a big bicycle tire (as in large diameter) or small motorcycle.
I was having the same difficulty with regular straps trying to slide the tray in, it's very fiddly, you have to guide the straps and the battery wires very carefully. I am going to see about just leaving the tray in place, hanging some straps on it and just put the packs on separately.

I use the 3M heavy duty velcro to attach the batteries. I have not had batteries come loose even after spending a full 4 min doing hard continuous ELE/AIL tictoc training on a number of occasions.

I'm still using the cut down bicycle inner tubes on my six battery trays and have had to replace a lot of them before flying last weekend due to the rubber disintegrating where they are tight on the CF tray.
I took the sharp edge off as well before fitting them. Nothing major but keep on eye on them

I am just removing the plastic tube off my braces, then I always use velcro between the batts and sliding tray. That with straps. I myself have had my larger velcro'd packs come loose. So the straps are cheap insurance.

Battery tray, rubber bands and spacing
Man, I've been using V1 for a while and today I noticed that the silicone cross bars are denting my packs and one of my packs was suddenly out of balance. Crap. I think I'm going to have to switch to another method.

You could try a larger O ring

I bought some 3rd party orings that are a bit softer than MC and stretch easier. No denting problems !

I have recently seen in a tool market small plastic L-profiles. If you fix them on the packs the silicopne is then pressing on them. Another method is to place under a second shrink tube a plate on the battery, either fiberglass or balsa wood, something isolating in each case.
