Almost ready to Build again...
Hey guys and gals,
I got just about everything I need to build another Protos. I am going with a Scorpion this time, the 880kv. I read around and can't seem to find a definite answer on whether or not there is any modifications to put a 13t, 14t, or 15t on this motor. Is the answer to this dependent on the version of the Protos? I am still undecided if I am going carbon or plastic again. I think that I should go plastic and get another kit for good luck. My first plastic hit the earth too damn hard(don't think that will happen again for a long time). Here is the electronics that I have or have in the mail. Scorpion 880kv (on the way from Readyheli) Align 60amp ESC (on the way from Helidirect) 3x9650's (collecting dust for 4 weeks now) Spartan ds760 and Futaba s9257 (same) Still have the 3 6s batteries from before each has one or two cycles on it. Tell me if you see something that I should be worried about with my setup. Thanks. oh and don't forget the first question about the pinions.(modifications?) Thanks for the help. Murphy

some people have posted that the S9257 isn't handling the tail well. I've one on my protos and it works fine but I like having more center of gravity options with 6s so I'm changing it for a BLS 251 which apart from being way more than possibly required, is also heavier.

For mild 3D, go 14T. For sport flying go 13T.

I had the 9257 on there before and it held very well and had no problems. no drifting or anything, I was amazed, but thanks for the headsup.
On the Snap, is there is modifications required for the shaft(remember scorpion motor) or what not to be able to put a 14t on there? Thanks

You need the MSH motor shaft adapter. The diameter of the shaft is OK, but I'm not sure of the length.

I had a problem today with my 9257 tail not holding on 11 degree pitch punch outs with a little, but not a lot, motor RPM decrease. When I got it back and attached the spartan USB I found that my "high endpoint" was not set sufficiently high: it wasn't using as much of the tail slider towards the boom, as it could be. I guess it really needs those last few mm especially if you aren't running a good governor.

You'll need to cut the Scorpion shaft if you want to run anything smaller than the 15T pinion. You may also want to rethink the 60A ESC, unless it's one that can handle temporary bursts over 60. As you can see from the data chart below, it's quite possible to hit 85 amps in the Protos with the Scorp 880, 15T pinion, and a good lipo.

Hmm.... I embedded an image to a Picasaweb photo. For some reason it's not showing up. Here's a direct link:
http://picasaweb.google.com/justplan...86834400466834 Lots of guys are running 60A ESCs in the Protos, but the data doesn't lie... you will exceed 60 amps if you get frisky with it.

Im with Chris on this, mine on tired packs managed to pull 1480watts and 78.5amps.
Depends on how you intednd to fly it though I guess. Mine is on the 14t pinion, still has loads of power to pull of 4 point tic tocs etc etc.

I finally got the bird last Friday and went for the maiden about an hour ago, still some minor adjusting to do, but she flies well, and the Scorpion sounds like a damn jet engine starting up. I attached some pics. They are not the greatest of quality as I took them with my Blackberry. As you notice, visibility was my theme this time. HA.
By the way I was extremely excited to see that I got the new canopy. I actually hollered out when I opened the box, my wife looked at me like I had totally lost it. The build went very well, only had problems with the pinion adapter it wouldn't go on the motor, so I took the other one off my old stock motor(from the previous Protos) and used it.

Where did you get the red vert stabilizer on the tail? Is that stock now?

The horizontal doesn't fit unless you really want it too. The vertical needs one of the holes widened a bit and it fits. I think they have the fiberglass version out now.
