Hey guys whats the easiest way to repair [ retighten] starter shaft socket on my 90 without pulling engine out if possible, or is that the only way? And what the best solution for starting the 90, my prolux starter doesnt even shift it, whats the best starter combo/setup? Thanks guys Happy New Year!

Default raptor start shaft coupling

xbrute,
If I'm right you're refering to the " hex " coupling for a starting shaft (wand).
I got this tip from raptortechnique.com
Drill a hole in the side of the pitch arm. A 1/8" should do the trick.
I would suggest checking out the above site. Mike Prewitt has an excellent site about raptors along with some great tips.
I hope this may be of some small help.
Regards

+1 on Lamars reply. The fix is easy to do and works great.

As for the starter xbrute, I had the same problem with not being able to start the engine in my raptor 90. Get a Sullivan Dynatron, I got one from HeliProz for under $95. Also get yourself a lipo pack, I have an Outrage 4s 3700 14.8v battery and it works great. IMHO, there is no better starter than the Dynatron, it will be last last one you ever need to buy.

Thanks for the reply guys! I found out why my temporary starter wasnt working, the ball on the end of the shaft is worn out and is rotating inside the starter hex socket. [The socket wasnt loose after i pulled the motor out anyway] MMMM plan B, i took my old prolux starter and removed the alloy head, i then drilled the id out to 3\8 and put in a 3 inch long bolt through used loctite and star washers and tightened the whole lot up. Instaled the plastic coupler and starter wand put the whole lot into my cordless drill and problem solved. No lipos no fuss and i can use the drill for round the house.

If your start coupler gets striped then i found the start coupler for the Knight 50 heli works on my 30, it has a much harder insert in the coupler that doesnt strip as easy. It only has one setscrew though but mine has been on for awhile and no problems loosening up.

I have a 15yr old Sullivan Hitorque starter, that doesn't budge my 90 once its been packed up for more than a week... however, I have found that i can get it running If remove the glow plug on such a day & run it for a few seconds, letting fuel into the engine, then half tightening the glow plug. Engine now starts easily so then tighten plug. run it for a 40sec or so.
now you can shut it off & reinsert glow plug extension & canopy etc..
engine tumbles over easily with starter now & will start it once you fly once a week or so!

of course, "what works for me, may not work with you. but you can try it & see if your starter just manages with this little trick!

Good reason to buy a DEWALT cordless drill
