Default Windows 8.1: Menu bar shows in full screen mode

Anyone experience this problem in Windows 8.1? This is a fresh install of Windows 8.1. Pro and RealFLight 7.5.

The menu bar show in full screen mode but is not usable.

Gory details already posted here.

Mine does that too. I found a workaround where you go into into the graphics settings in RF and toggle full-screen from there which fixes it for that session, but you have to do that every time. It's kind of annoying.

I noticed that too. But on my system there's no sound if I use that workaround.

Called RF support today. Turns out this is a known bug vis-à-vis Windows 8.1. As it was explained to me, the RF 7.5 code base is DirectX 9 (from back in the Windows XP glory days). This has caused compatibility problems with Windows 8.1 (DirectX 11)—such as the failure to remove the menu bar in full screen mode.

Hey, I just found a fix that works for me!

I was reading this thread about "kablooie" and learned about the console commands.

https://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=680147

In RF7.5, one of the commands is fullScreenToggle.

Here's the recipe:
hit ~ to open the console
enter: "bind F fullScreenToggle"
hit ~ again to close the console.

Now type capital-F. Either once, or twice, and I end up in fullscreen mode without a title bar, and my audio still works.

You can put that key binding in a startup script, but I haven't gotten that far yet. I wanted to get this fix out into people's hands ASAP to see if it works for others.

I don't know which earlier versions of RF it may work for.

Jim

I gave this workaround a try. It worked for me. Tx!

BTW, I had to press "F" three times to get RF into full screen mode. But I discovered that once I changed the graphics settings to Fullscreen = No, I only had to press the "F" key once.

For me, this eliminates a major annoyance when running on Win 8.1 pro. Hope the next RF release will fix the problem properly.

I just added your command to the startup.rfscript file. Works. Conveniently, this is also how I have Heli-X set up for full screen mode.

(Instead of typing shift-F. Try being lazy and turn on the caps lock key and see what happens when you press "f" )

I haven't gotten my copy of RF in yet but you could try to run it in XP compatibility mode. Right click and go to properties, should see the option there.

You can also try to run the .exe from command line with -dx9 at the end. Should force it to use directx 9.
