I'm curious about it too... more details would be great because on the surface it looks like it's not much more than a 500mAh 2S LiPo... maybe regulated to 5V

Can it be used with a 7.4V BEC?

Manual is available here - http://www.scorpionsystem.com/files/...ckup-Guard.pdf
It has an indicator LED system for letting you know if it is low on power which is important if your BEC has failed but you don't know it. To be used with any BEC rated over 5V. Not sure what extra details people are after?

That's pretty cool! I think I'll get a couple, and use them instead of my DC-UPII capacitor packs. They seem light enough.

Seems to only work with 8.4v not 7.4

It's a 2S LiPo so it says to charge it up to 8.4V, it outputs 5V and works where any system voltage is over 5V. Once the system's voltage drops below 5V this battery pack kicks in to supply 5V.

Or doesn't it charge so the 2s never gets in the way of your bec? Than You can even use on lv setups and it would be perfect.
Manual states 1 way system. It simply puts out 5v when the bec power is lower than that 5v.

It won't let the helicopter's 'normal' power system charge it, that's the 'one way' part.
I think it would probably only be practical on systems 6V and over... you'd have to guarantee that the system voltage is going to be over 5V otherwise you'll be draining the Scorpion. If you're running a 5V system the Scorpion will probably be competing with the BEC. I've logged flights where the BEC voltage fluctuated as much as 0.2V through the flight, so to be on the safe side the system should be over 5.5V, or the two would be competing with each other... and/or you'd never know that you're running on the backup should the primary fail...

Perfect, this is what I have been looking for. Its no problem to check the scorpion power at the field at interval times. But I run 6v and on my other heli 7.4v so all good. Gryphon gives very constant voltage. I now use the dc-up but that gives 7 seconds servo control and you dont know that the bec has shut down if it did, so not very usefull. Its more to backup power hungry servos like Savox.

scorpion backup guard charging
Guys,
A little lost on how you charge the thing ? The instructions indicate that you charge through the jst-xhr plug, but on a normal lipo this would be the balance lead. The thing I don't get is how do you charge and balance through the same plug lead. If you have got one can you please indicate how to please.. Thanks Guys //Wayne |

Good question. The only 2s charger I've seen that charges and balances through the same lead is the E-Flight 130x charger.

Thru the servo connector seems logical.

I don't think that will work since it is a one way connection. It does not let voltage back into the battery throught the servo connector if I understand correctly.
The iCharger will not charge through the balance plug, so what is the best way to charge this?

I believe the pl8 can charge thru the balance plug.

OK here is what I did. I made a charge cable from the ec3 to balance connector on my parallel charge board. The iCharger shows 2s connected through the balance port and correct voltage through the main charge leads. This should allow me to balance charge the Backup Guard.

Are you sure this will this work, have you tried to charge it yet?
I've just ordered a scorpion backup guard but never thought about how to charge it before I ordered. I'll be using a Revolectrix PL6 which does not allow you to charge through the balance plug only. |
