OK so I'm a bit confused - whats the difference between the SKB case that you guys got and this one that apparently retails for $350?? just the foam?

Default Cabela's Bow Case T-rex 500

Thought I would revive this thread since the info on a case for the 500 seems to have gotten really slim lately.

Heres one thats on sale. Comes to $100 with shipping. Seems like a good case.

My guitar case ($15)

Oh and i use a backpack for batteries and TX.

The bag with the heli together is 1.6kg.... soooo easy to carry...

The backpack with the batteries is about 3kg but I don't feel it because my laptop is almost the same.

I found a cheap helicopter bag at eBay and strap it on a mountain backpack (w/toolbox and batteries). I can get anywhere on foot. No long and achy arms.

I just looked at that case, there are some pillars in the centre of the case that you would need to cut out (dremel) to make it work. It was also only about 15mm wider inside than the skids

I bought a Doskil Se 44 instead, a little wider and not centre pillars to remove

Hi from Brissy, just wondering where you bought your case and what foam are you using. I have no imagination for this stuff

I bought the case from a local archery shop, see www.archerymart.com.au if you talk to james, he knows all about it.

I took the case to clark rubber and they cut pieces of high density foam to fit in. This was the expensive bit. You could use other foam, just search yellow pages. I almost bought a cheap foam mattress to cut up

Thanks for the reply. I found one at Cabelas in the US at a good price. I visited Clark Rubber but was not impressed by the dude serving me so I may go to another branch or visit an upholsterer either furniture or auto.

Did you have enough room for another heli eg a 450 size?

Looking forward to receiving this case as I paranoid about hangar rash on my very pretty toy!

I went with the one heli, but everything else with it, Radio, Charger, tools spares even space for extra lipos. Basically i just need to grab the one case and head out to fly.

The tie cleats have Velcro hooks on the bottom and can be positioned anywhere on the top or bottom halve of the case.

All of the items were positioned in the case for illustration. The TX and heli will need to be secured with straps to prevent shifting in the case.

When closing the case, only the landing gear touches both sides of the case,
there is a 3/8 gap when lid is closed, so the case foam will absorb the pressure applied to the landing gear when the case is fully closed and locked.
Update on what this case looks like today. I read this post and ordered the case, some things may have changed in its construction:
"The padding is 3/4 inch Styrofoam, a 1/4 in layer of foam and a 1/8 in layer Velcro loop."

There is NOT 3/4 inches of styrofoam in this case. There may be a 1/4 inch layer of foam topped by velcro. Very thin, with not enough padding in stock format. While the landing gear is held firmly, and this may be fine to travel to the field, I'm planning on using this as checked luggage to travel w/ heli, and definitely need to find some foam and cradle the canopy and tail boom so they remain in place and don't shift excessively.
Any suggestions on the best places to get foam appreciated.

Last fall, when I flew to Western Samoa, I used rolled up bubble wrap placed strategically.
Especially for torque tube 500's, so that you don't strip gears, remove the main and tail rotor blades.

Mapas,

Brilliant idea on the guitar case. Picked one up today and it works excellent.
