550 ready to go (with vid)

Got the 550 back up and running after actually stripping a .8 mod Fusion (original white) main gear on it last week... on the 550! Shows how poor those old gears were. I put on another white.. but this one boiled in silicone oil at 100º C for 30 mins... anxious to see how it holds out. I hear good things about the silicone treatment

Still loving this heli. Even flying my Fusion and Goblin 100+ flights in the last 2 months. I am so comfy with it and have so many spare parts I have no fear of crashing.

Going today.. got the stuff in the truck.. only thing I forgot the canopy and I don't get home before the field. I'll get a video anyway. I need practice flying without a canopy anyway.. it's very good for orientation training.

Well I did get a video. No canopy. and crappy skies giving a silhouette but it was fun flying anyway. First time actually I've ever been comfortable flying without a canopy.. with clouds no less... I guess that's what 5 years of flying finally gets me.

Awful video.. and camera didn't focus well either. I'll get a better one next sunny day.

I had a belt snap spooling up for my maiden this morning (lucky she was still on the ground ) so need some time this weekend and hope to join you in the air!

I just looked at my records... I haven't crashed my 550 in over 400 flights now! What a workhorse! Of course I shouldn't have said that as I am going to fly it some more today She does have a prior record though.. 14 hard crashes. Mostly from 2011.

Yesterday I had an incredible save... I completely lost orientation (clouds and no canopy) and fought it for like 10 seconds on the way down and pulled it out just as it went in to a patch of tall grass... the tail was full of grass when I landed. Also it was making a squealing sound and I figured it was a stripped main gear from hitting FULL collective many times on the way down.. and it turned out it was just a blade sticker that lifted from hitting the grass.. I flew the 2nd half of the battery once I pulled the sticker off. A very entertaining helicopter.
