Looking for a new frame!
Hey folks!
Well waiting for the last few parts to come for my Belt-CP... (DAMN MAIN GEAR!!) I've decided to upgrade the bird more, perhaps just build a whole second bird that's really good and use it when I get some fly experience under my belt. My Belt-CP looks awesome mounted on the wall like a rack of deer horns - now I want a second bird besides it. So far, on my new heli-build, I've bought a second set of the CopterX V2 head/tail combo. Now, I'm deciding on the frame - but, I need some experienced master feedback from you eXpertz. For the frame here are some aspects I'm looking for:
So far, I've been browsing two sites, helidirect.com and esky-twf.com. I've found two frames that are roughly in my price zone and really appealing to me. I was looking at the CopterX frame for the 450AE I think? It's all alunimum, I'm avoiding carbon fiber, as pretty as it is, it's too brittle in my expereince with it outside of RC Helis. Another frame I'm looking at is the Superframe STK. It looks great and is apparently fully compatible with the TREX/Belt-CP 450 parts - not to meantion cheaper then the CopterX frame and also less parts (Less parts as in it's only two side peices, versus four. My philosophy is the less parts the mroe stronger and cheaper it is to fix and maintain). Really hope you guys can help my make the right choice. =D Just a note: I can only shop from places that accpet PayPal! I'm a no credit-card person and I'm located in Canada. I just cancled my main-gear order from RC711 since it's gonna be another 3 weeks (TOURTURE!!!) so hopefully where ever I'm directed to buy the frame from, they have a Belt-CP main gear, and horizontal stabilizers in stock (Oh and Align 325 blades!). I wanna buy everything in one shot since shipping costs suddenly just sky-rocketed! Thanks guy! Sorry for the long post. =P |

OK, if you want to go with the Superframe, you can get everything from HeliDirect.
Main gear: Blade 400 main gear with one-way bearing: http://www.helidirect.com/product_in...oducts_id=5974 or without: http://www.helidirect.com/product_in...oducts_id=5973 Align 325 woodies: http://www.helidirect.com/product_in...oducts_id=1104 And an Align stabilizer set: http://www.helidirect.com/product_in...roducts_id=880 Or the Blade 400 stabilizer set: http://www.helidirect.com/product_in...oducts_id=6528 If you need the mount for the horizontal stabilizer, I upgraded to a CNC aluminum Blade 400 part: http://www.helidirect.com/product_in...oducts_id=9352 looks like those are currently out of stock. This would work: http://www.helidirect.com/product_in...oducts_id=6946 |

What about the super-duper super-cheap HK-450 clone from HobbyCity? It's getting pretty rave reviews.
Only $35 + around $20 shipping from China!!!! I've got one on order. I'm hoping that my partner won't notice it's a new heli as I'll only fly it under cover of my Belt CP canopy. :-) The HK-450 is a Trex450 clone, and as such should be able to use the STK side panels. Karen

Thanks for the replies guys!
Karen, I tried to find that frame! I guess they don't have it in stock at hobbyshop. =( I think I'm gonna go with the Superframe STK. Although I'm curious. What parts will I need to get it rolling, hopefully all my esky servos, motor, and boom fits! What about the landing skids, will any 450 class land gear fit? I know I need the shaft and main gear. Thanks kronin for the links! Saved me a bit of time, I was browsing the site and found some of the ESky parts I needed, but I'm gonna go with the blade and align stuff. I'm fed-up with Esky. lol |

Okay - So here is what I have for my new heli - please let me know if I'm doing things right? I'm going for a black frame, everything else blue and blades/paddles/fins being black with the addition of some white. I think it'll look sexy. =P
CopterX Canopy - http://www.esky-twf.com/shop/product...oducts_id=8359 CopterX Metal Main Rotor Head Set V2 & Metal Tail Rotor Set - http://www.esky-twf.com/shop/product...oducts_id=9687 The CopterX head comes with the Shaft so I assume I won't need to buy one. CopterX Flybar Paddle Set - http://www.esky-twf.com/shop/product...oducts_id=8820 Align 325MM Pro Rotor Blades - http://www.helidirect.com/product_in...roducts_id=731 Superframe STK - http://www.helidirect.com/product_in...oducts_id=1094 MainGear/Tail Drive System Trex 106T - http://www.helidirect.com/product_in...oducts_id=1455 TowerPro SG90 9G Servos - http://www.helidirect.com/product_in...roducts_id=611 HDX450 Plastic Landing Gear / Strusts - http://www.helidirect.com/product_in...oducts_id=4368 Trex 450 Tail Rotor Blades (Large) - http://www.helidirect.com/product_in...oducts_id=6354 1.5MM G10 Verticle/Horizontal Stabilizers - http://www.helidirect.com/product_in...oducts_id=1128 Magic Blue Tail Boom - http://www.helidirect.com/product_in...oducts_id=1464 So hopefully all that is left is the ECS, motor, TX/RX, gyro and battery. As far as the tiny things like the servo mounts for the boom and the satbilizer mounts, I'll just use the spare ones that come with the boom and my Belt-CP parts. Let me know guys! =D |

What you need to decide is whether you are going to stay with Belt CP geaing ratios, or go to the T-Rex main gears, as one will not fit the other.

I'm gonna go all out trex 450 with this heli. Although like I mentioned previously, if I can swop some esky parts in and out for the time being that would be handy! Stuff like the electronic and the odd mechanical part. Excluding things like the gears/head because I know they are not compatible. =D Reason why is it'd save the odd buck or too or put things off for a desirable time period until I'm ready to make more purchases. I kinda started out just wanting to upgrade the belt but figured ah build another one. |

Heres a link to his website http://www.10starhelihobby.webs.com/
He cuts them himself and is a member here on the freak. Send him a message he may work out a deal with you.

If you dont have the plastic bearing block set, the screw and spacer set, and the CF battery tray, my g10 frames can be quite the pretty penny. Thats kind of why its primarily for the carbon version belt.. and its my luck that practically NOONE owns the CF edition
And honestly, i wouldnt have one or the g10 frames if it wouldnt have been for the remains of a crashed one that i bought off the hobbytown here for $20. It was a deal in my book. I got a complete cf frame (broken sides of course), a cf horizontal fin, some esky cnc mixer arms, some esky cnc main blade grips (now on the tail of my e smart btw, lil tip for any of the e-smarters that have some spare cnc main grips. just cut the grip in half in the middle of the bearings. so all you have is one thrust bearing and one axial bearing), and the complete tail system minus the bearings. The screw and spacer set can be thrown together with some small aluminum tubing cut into short peices and screws from your LHS but the bearing block set would be a little difficult to make. If i can come by some g10 thats 3/16 or 1/4 thick id make some but until then... I can substitute the free hor or ver tail fin with the g10 lower frame/battery tray as i havnt had 10 frame purchases yet. If you would still like the free fin, a tray would be another $5

Hey Stepside, I'd buy one from you but I'm broke at the moment. Down the road if work picks up I'd like to get the frame from you to rebuild the broken CF that I have now. Do you plan on keeping the layout?

+1 I want one but I'm in the poor boat too! I hope you still have one when I get some money cause I got all the cnc blocks ect. but two broken upper frames so I'd just order the kit. My dad (if he gets off his lazy butt) is going to CNC the strut mounting blocks for the skids out of Delrin that are going on it too! I've already promised Copterdad a set.(forever and a day ago) That's the one part you have to buy the whole stupid plastic upgrade set for, when you go full CNC, which I don't need just the 2 pieces out of the whole set.

YES its extremely stupid because those things break ALOT. i broke both of mine so I found some 1/2" by 1/2" aluminum angle iron and cut 3/8" peices to bolt to the frame and a small strip of g10 to go across the bottom to support the struts. Delrin LG blocks would be cool though. When i come across a thick peice of g10 i want to make some out of that. Or even aluminum ones Im surprised esky didnt make some. or did they?

Yea originally my dad was going to make aluminum strut mounts but never went to get the metal then a friend gave him 2 blocks of Delrin but he still hasn't done anything yet. Though we made the plans on the computer the first day I told him to make me some. So all he would need to do is throw them in the machine and press start. But to answer your question no Esky never made them except in the plastic upgrade set just every other thing you need. The BIG brains Esky has is amazing!

I was going to get the CF frame for my belt but my past experiences with CF isn't that great - plus it adds to the glitching factor (CF is so conductive with RF signals).
onehot69stepside, how much do you think it'd cost (rough figure) for the stuff I need and for you G10 stuff - out of curiosity. I'm surprised Esky don't offer a G10 frame - even a basic aluminum frame would be a good move on their behalf. =/ |
