Sweet looking heli.
Hey if the gyro works there nothingg wrong with it.
From what I understand about gyros the closer you get to the center axis the better it works anyway.

Its not for function its the thought of the gyro bouncing off the ground in a crash!

Nope. The gyro senses rotational acceleration, not linear. It makes no difference whether it is under the mainshaft or at the end of the tail boom. Imagine the heli is spining at 1rpm. Every part of the heli is spinning the same 360deg/s rate. So no matter where the gyro sits, it sees the same rotational acceleration and speed.

However, that looks like a Logictech 2100T gyro for which the sense axis is perpendicular to the top cover. It cannot work for your heli in that vertical orientation, it has to be horizontal. I hope you didn't try to fly with it mounted anywhere on your heli in a vertical orientation

I keep it under the boom but I just stuck it there for the pics so people could see the 2100.
