Adding a Flightpower 3s LiPo to the DX7

Strange, I clicked that link a few hours ago and it didn't work. Now it works. 2000 mah Infina seems better then 1500 mah flightpower I think.

Capacity alone makes it nice, but the fact that it last a looooooooooong time really sets it above all the others. Plus you're supporting another hobbyist, so it makes it a nice exchange.

I looked at HeliDirect and couldn't find the Infina Packs¿
Since it's a Li-Ion ~~ Can you charge it with the standard wall charger that comes with the radio or do you charge it with a Lipo Charger.

The only place i could find the infina pack was at Infina Models.com

I've already done the digital voltage Regulator mod but I'd love to run a better battery.

I used one of my old hyperion litestorm packs; it's too tired to fly the a 450 but runs the tx just fine for days. I charge through the original jack but keep it to 1A or less due to the small wires. No mods required, just soldered on the correct connector.

Yup, just make sure you have the correct polarity on the plug charge lead you make...

True RC has a 2500 mah lipo pack that's perfect fit (same size as stock NiMH) for the DX7 ... Comes with the white JR connector. Don't forget to flip the charge port on the radio! $30 + shipping.

Horizon support states that a battery that is more than 11.5 volts will burn out the output transistor. The 11.1 lipo at full charge is 12.7 volts. Are there any problems with this?

dunno about that, im on 12.7 volts and the Tx is happy so far , as are plenty of others

I think you have that wrong. A fully charged LIPO is at 12.60V, not 12.70V. The original battery in the DX7 is capable of getting above 10.8V easily. Fully charged at 1.5V/cell, the NiMh pack gets about 12V total, so I don't know why Horizon would say something like that to begin with. The nominal voltage of the stock pack is at 9.6V, so that might've thrown you off a bit.

It is more the linear voltage regualtor they use. The higher the input voltage, the hotter the voltage regulator gets.

Your choice, but I see no reason to use lipos in a Tx. They are ligher and can be fast charged.

But, you shouldn't leave lipos fully charged for long periods. If you leave you Tx on overnight or so you can over discharge your pack. You have to take the door off to charge (can't charge through the normal charge jack). If you screw up the pack and it puffs, it can break the Tx. If it explodes it destroyes you Tx. And you void your warranty.

You can actually still charge through the normal charge jack. I like it because its lighter and takes longer to discharge.

Not if you want to balance the pack, and we all know you should balance every charge.

And my 2700 mAH NiMH packs lasts longer than your 2100 - 2500 mAH Lipo pack.

Lipo on Transmitter is great.
All I did was buy one from Hobby City. This battery comes with a low voltage cutout built in so if you leave your trans on Overnight your battery does not die.
I cut the plug from my Nimh battery and soldered it to the Lipo AND at the same time I inserted a simple small diode. This drops the voltage .6 of a volt. This gives a max voltage of 12v.
The diode also prevents any accidental attempt to charge by the normal charger.
No mods required to the transmitter. To replace the battery with a new standard battery just plug it in. To charge the Lipo I use a balance lead with a modified plug. The power lead is just soldered to each side of the balance plug. This works perfectly with my BC6 Balance charger. I only need to charge monthly. Works for me!

1) What battery has the cutoff?
2) What diode did you use?
3) Can you get the diode from Radio Shack?
