I had this problem too with my Protos and 520. Wag that wouldn't go away. Not as bad as yours, but still... I had a 9257 paired with the 520. 1 layer Futaba tape. The picture shows how I mounted it. The two ways you mounted yours should work too. I found the solution by accident. While at IRCHA 2009, Corrado himself looked over my Protos. He said everything looked good except that the belt was too loose. He showed how tight the belt should be. Almost like a guitar string (not really, but it's tight). I went back to the tent and tightened the belt. Went for a test fly and like magic, no wag whatsoever! Held rock solid through out the flight. Nothing changed in the gyro settings, just a tighter belt. I was even able to increase the gain a little. Amazing. Before you buy a new servo, try tightening the belt. Both motor side and the tail side. And I mean tight... Good luck!

Well, think I cracked it!
With the GP780 still in place, moved the ball in to 7.5 mm and tightened up the belt (real tight) as per DriveWRX's recommendation. Much better, but still wagged a bit. Then I put the GY520 back on the Protos. I had a newfound confidence in the GY520, since it worked so well on the T-rex 250. I mounted it underneath this time, so that the lead doesn't loop out to the side. Hovered it in the garage (it's -8 F outside today) and the wag was gone. One thing I wondered: if the gyro is mounted on top with the lead looped loosely out to the side, might not the buffeting from the downwash shake the gyro lead a bit? I'm not sure if this would have any great effect, but when mounted underneath it's out of the way. Thanks to all (especially Clem, DriveWRX, aliosha, and sarah), for your advice! |

I am so happy that you got it resolved sir.
As far as the buffeting of the wire goes, it is entirely possible. I have not had it happen and the wire is mounted very similarly to the way yours is on my Trex 600E, Knight Pro, Raptor 50, and Odin II, so I would not have expected that.

Well, I thought that I had it licked. But that was just a simple hover in the garage. When I took it outside a few days later, it was still misbehaving a bit (wagging).
So I threw caution to the wind (and my credit card) and bought a BLS251. Now it's solid. Just goes to show, sometimes you do get what you pay for. The BLS 251 is fast and smooth. I even set the ball out to 13.5 mm again as per the Protos instructions. It doesn't chatter and make noise like the Savox servo. Anyone want a Savox 1290MG? I'm sure it will work well on some helis, just not the Protos. |

A little slow for a tail servo, just remember a 450 will lift a standard tail servo without a problem. The align ds520 seems to be popular at the mo.

65hb's are good servos.
I think I mentioned earlier in the thread about your tail servo possibly being an issue. Glad you changed it out. The BLS251 is an end all servo.

I have had excellent results with the GY520 with the following servos:
Futaba 9650 Futaba 9254 JR 3400G JR 3500G JR 8900G all-thumbs, Glad you got it (this time)! Sometimes these things are really hard to diagnose-your perseverance paid off sir!

Hello all
Can anyone tell me what the Gain setting under the AVCS Settings area in the Gyro Software does? I have watched the Futaba vid and oddly for all that he explains in detail for each one of the settings, he skips right over that one. Btw this is the one that is by default set to 40. Thanks for any help. |

A second question I have is.
Does changing those default channel assignments for the Rudder and Gain mean anything if I am not using the SBus? I see where there is no way to change that via just the buttons and from the software setup vid, he seems to say that there is not need to change this, so from just that I am thinking it doesn't but I just wanted to ask. For me as I thought it mattered, I have changed them from the default of Rudder=2, Gain =3...to Rudder=4,Gain=5 as that is how it is on my Rec. But if there is no need for this, if I ever reset the gyro, can I just leave them on the defaults? Thanks. |

"I'll be receiving a 520 in the near future

Good Gyro/Servo combination. WBFAir, I apologize, I have never used the software settings/computer interface with the gyro, so I cannot answer this. I have not had to go beyond the normal programming. I suspect you can get even more performance out of the gyro with the software, but i have not tried it yet.

Just to mention it, I spent most of the summer trying to get rid of my tail pull but never really did. I have made a few posts to a few places about the adjustments that you can make with this software but as of yet I have never gotten a single reply where anyone seems to know anything really about what all the settings do. I even wrote the guy that made that vid for Futaba Steve Calub or something, and he wrote me back once but then when I sent him a follow up getting in to the exact details, he never wrote back. Point being, although obviously someone knows these things, as far as all my travels in the community, I have yet to find anyone who knows anything about them. Anyway, about the best things I found that helped, even eventually when I did play with a few of the software gain settings and a few other things, (which I found didn't solve the problem btw), was that I am now running I think somewhere around 3200 HS, and have switched over to some Edge main blades and Pro size tail blades. All this helped reduce the problem but it still is there. For me the season is over but all in all though I have committed to changing over the helo to FBL next spring and going with a BeastX, which will get rid of the 520. Its a real shame I think though as I think this Gyro has a lot of potential of making it a real killer because of all the tweaks that are there, but for some reason nobody in the hobby seems to care about it as I guess most are just happy enough with the way that it is with just the basic setup. What ever. At any rate, thanks for the reply anyway. |
