Question PSU Advise For PL8x2 (Dual Version)

This thread is similar to the previous thread except I am using the dual version of the powerlab 8.

I saw the charging case that progressive sold at ircha with the (2) Mean Well RSP 2000-48 power supplies and have done research on the whole buck/boost topic as well. I think the Progressive IRCHA case is a bit of overkill...and I would never max it out. I am using standard 110v AC with 15/20amp breakers at home, and a small generator at the field.

I usually charge 6 3300mah to 5000 mah batteries in parallel on one channel then leave my other channel open for charging my 2s receiver lipos and MCPX bl 2s lipos while Im flying the Goblin/Trex.

I have been using the feathermerchant psus but am looking to develop something more portable with the mean wells.

Do you recommend one 2000w48v, two 2000w48v, one 1500w24v or maybe two 1000w24v meanwells? And following that question whats the best place to buy these?

Thank you in advance!!

The Meanwells are very nice units. Very compact, light weight and solid. In the Meanwell line, the 48v version will keep you clear of the buck/boost transitions regardless of cell count.

With the 24v version you'll be running it the transitions with 6s packs as well as hitting the input current limit on the supplies. The voltage on the 24v supplies can be modified. If you raise it, you'll hit the transitions if you go to 7s. If you lower it, you'll hit the input current limit. The only upsides to the 24v is greater compatibility with other chargers, and faster charge startup times on the second channel.

One 2000 watt supply won't max out the charger. But it will max out most AC sockets. Just because you can charge at 80 amps total doesn't mean you have to, or that is practical for your charging scenario. I would factor in your generator size (or willingness to upgrade), charge rates for the packs and the desired charge cycle times. Once you have that more solidly nailed down, sizing the supply becomes a bit more straightforward.

The other thing to think about is the weight and configuration of your charging case. I currently have 14lbs of supplies in case that weighs 25 lbs. Its nice to have all that power, but its tad on the heavy side. I just picked up some DPS-1200FB supplies which are very small, and light. The Meanwells are going to be lighter but it all adds up.

Thank you very much for the advice!

Do you see any problem with splitting one Mean Well 2000w 48v between the two inputs of the dual PL8?

I don't foresee maxing out the limits of the charger (with both channels at 40 amps), but will easily do 30 amps on one channel and 5 on the other charging the flight and rx batteries.

The RSP-2000 de-rates its 2000 watt output down to about 1600 watts when running from 115v AC. That comes out to about 1440 watts to the packs. Or 28.5 amps per channel. This about the limit of a 2000 generator, so its likely not a limiting factor at the field.

At the limit of the supply, one of the channels may report a unstable supply error and abort the charge.

I have four of these, all floated, so it's 48v capable on two 110vac circuits and working very well. Combined weight of the supplies w/o power cables is 10.6lbs.
