Hello,
Need advice about tail servo. I'm thinking about getting one from hobbyking, but not sure if anything there will worth it. I have GA-250 Mini MEMS Gyro. Othervice will buy Align DS520, but its over my budget |

I would suggest at least 70A ESC or more. 50A is almost certainly too small.

Quote:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=8255 The specs on this one are good, and would work with your gyro http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=10968 But it has very mixed reviews - use at your own risk!! Not really much else, remember the instructions for that gyro say use a digital servo only.

First of all - thank you! I'm more and more convinced to get Align DS520 for around $43 with shipping.
My biggest concern now is choosing ESC. I read lots of bad reviews about Turnigy Plus 80A, my friend got 80A SS series ESC and its much worse. I really dont know which one to buy. Best choice is CC ice 75A, but thats just not possible for me. I have Hobby King 500H Heli Motor 1600kv and 6s 2650mah 30C. I'm looking for ESC around 40-45$. |

I use this one:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...85A_w/_5A_SBEC It works fine, although the soft start is not great, so be easy on the throttle on startup. Raf/Erwin use one in their HK 600, as far as I know, and have not had a problem, but Chris used one in his 500 and it let out the magic smoke . Mostly good reviews on HK site, when it works, but some reports of DOA or short life. Personally, I would buy another one if I needed it, but just wanted you to be aware so you can make your own choice Another choice is the 80A Superbrain http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=10943 Bit more expensive but has data logging, and generally good reviews except for a few DOA or short life again (pretty common with all HK stuff really, poor quality control). I've not used it, but looks OK. Or the 70A K-Force, about the same price as the superbrain, but needs an external BEC and is out of stock http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=9130 Again, not used it but gets OK reviews. From HK, that's about it for choices.

Hey Dave, have you looked into a 600 scale heli yet? I know it wasn't long ago you did this project, but hey, there's no harm in another project, is there?
Jonny

ValHeli, it's always been here, 'cos this is where I "live", where my friends are It's holding up fine, not flying it as much as I would like maybe, but usually 3 or 4 batteries a week. Just basic scale flying, nothing too adventurous (well, it is an AS350 after all ), and all good And still flying the 450s as well of course, and mSR.
Jonny, yeah, been looking at it. If I go 600, I expect it will be another HK bird In fact, just yesterday I added a few things to a HK wishlist (BLS950 cyclic and BLS980 tail servos, Quark gyro, Typhoon 600 motor, NanoTech batteries, Superbrain ESC) just to get an idea of cost. No decision on a fuselage yet, but been looking at the RC Aerodyne site. But all projects on hold for now, as I'll be moving house in about 6 weeks. In fact, my assignment contract in Cyprus is ending (after 5 years here), and moving back to Northern Ireland. I'll still keep the CyprusDave handle though

I chose 5S to use with the Typhoon motor as it is rated at 1800KV, and some reports suggest it is even higher. To use 6S with this motor, you would have to use a smaller motor pinion, like 10T or even 9T in theory, otherwise the headspeed will be too high. However 10T is hard to find and I'm not sure a 9T even exists!. Using 5S, you can use the 13T supplied with the kit, and 11T, 12T, 14T and 15T are all easy to find if you want to fine-tune. The reason 6S is recommended for the T-Rex 500 is that the Align motor is only 1600KV.
I'm happy with the choice, I get good flight times (8+ minutes), the batteries, motor and ESC all come down barely warm (even in the scale fuse), and Raf kindly confirmed (using Heliport and the audio from the vid I posted) that the head speed is around 2200 RPM which is just where I wanted it. And it feels right too

Congradulations, indeed!
Congradulations to Dave, too! From time to time we see the question posed as to why this exhists in this forum? Well, exactly for this reason. If by deviating from strictly Belt topics we can help even just one person have success, then all of us succeed.

I was having an issue with my linkage rod being too long, and through the search found this thread.
Great info and very cool to see so many HK's flying and being used. Mine is the HK500CMT, and yes, mine is about 80% Align. I didnt even try the head, I was having issues with the mixing arms binding if you try to tighten them down all the way, the short link to one of the blade grips was snapped, I wouldnt have noticed it except I am highly compulsive about loctiting everything, alot of guys lately are converting to FBL 500's so I bought up 4 ESP heads and two all metal tail assemblies. I also went with Align Main and auto gears and hub, and Align Belt drive. I was planning on running 5S 3000mAh 30C batteries with a 12T pinion on the 1800 Kv motor, but I think the head speed will be too low..( 12T= 2296rpm...13T= 2488??) went with the Turnigy 85A ESC ( Not sure if its the Tz85A or the Tg85A... one is, I believe, the 4A SBEC, the other is the 5A SBEC??) Looks like I'm going to have to go CF on the servo rod...Cant thank you guys enough for all the great info. I do have a question... When I switched to the Align belt drive, the HK belt drive has a small brass shim or washer used on one end of the drive gear shaft, but I dont see that in the Trex manual, since the Align drive has gone in the HK tail/boom case, Should I use the shim? Or not? If anyone swapped out the tail drive to Align, let me know what you did please. Thanks again all!! Mike
