Raptor 90 se Help and advice
I have come back to this wonderful hobby after a two year break. I was only at the stage of lazy eights when i gave up. I have just got a 90 se and using a dx7. Can anybody advise me on transmitter settings to make it really docile while i get back into it?

From what I remember all my servos are at 100% for endpoints then I use about 30% expo for aileron and elevator....rudder will be different per gyro and servo combo.
Wait...don't exactly remember this setup...forgot, it's single servo for collective. I'll look when I get home today. Am I to understand you just picked up the 90? If so, you'll love it. the only major downside is fuel cost....that's it.

expo on ail and elv are 15%...my 50's (trex) are around 30%
D/R is 90% in norm and 100% in idle up travel adjust is 100% + - on ail, elev, rudder is 150% (many suggest this), pitch is 150% (don't know why it's so high...could be due to the G-force head I have (fantastic head...built like a tank) throttle will vary engine to engine...right now mine is 85 high and 36 low (not quite setup here though) throttle curve in norm is L 12% 1- 43% 2 69% 3-76% H-80.5% idle 1 is in at 90 and out at 90 with mid at 80% expo on idle 2 is 98% in and out and 87% mid expo on I don't run a gov yet so my settings are just what work for me right now. pitch curve is linear on in all my rates 0 to 100% expo on. Haven't set pitch curves for anything else as I was just getting into my setup before I crashed. I'm in the process of getting the bird back in the air after the last crash. Killed the engine because of an exploding clutch and bell...engine sucked in frag and broke the crank toasted the liner, ring and piston. Other than the engine boom, TT, a few links, blades and a servo Oh, and the shafts in the head. that really wasn't a good day but considering it was a hard inverted landing due to a failed aileron servo...not all bad. I can say this thing actually rolls quite nice.

We flew mine last wed and the pitch was so touchy Im wondering if your pitch travel at 150 is because of that. 150 on travel will make the pitch curve more docile.
My elev and aile are now at 80% with 30% expo. For me it was way too touchy so Im trying this tomorrow. Also working on the settings on my OS91 Max SV as I got this bird from a guy in San Diego and he shipped to me where Im at 6500ft elev. Needless to say it ran very rich when I first started it.

One of the things to consider is how far out the balls are on the arms for collective. Mine isn't too far out. I think it's 14-16mm. Also, was thinking what servos you are using as well as paddles.
I figured that 150% was too much, don't know what's up with that. It'll be a week before I get my bird in the air...less I can get a bunch of work done today...just too much little stuff. And I've not too hot about the Align servos I have so it may be longer til I get another servo.

that's a sweet setup you got there. The only warning I'd give is with the Align servos. They're good as to the specs but like all Align electronics they suffer from reliability. I'm sure they'll last you a season, maybe more but you just never know.
I had the 610's on mine...great response and plenty strong but they're what caused my crash. The aileron servo pegged to one side causing an uncontrollable roll. I know many people have had great luck with them, just I have no faith in the Align electronics anymore. their 600 size esc's go out, the regulators go out, mostly the switch but the reg itself has been known to just stop working, servos have a tendency to stop working or pegging, motors in the 600 size class have problems. not trying to scare you, just inform you. the servos in my raptor are now going to be hitec 7940th's with a fromeco reg, switching to perfect reg ccpm soon.

If you have the manual for your raptor, take a look at end of the manual... There are a bunch of suggested settings for beginners to extreme 3D.
The one I remember off the top of my head was putting the ball at 14mm out on the collective servo. 10.5mm for Aileron, which also happens to be the original location anyway... I switched to a push/pull elevator setup, and I don't remember what the setting was. If you don't have a manual, send me a PM, I'll give you all the settings they recommend for a beginner. Joe_Breezy

dont forget to read up on the tail drive pin failure and what to do to fix it with the shrink wrap on the drive gears. it will save a headache later on.

Thank you all very much for the help and advice. A good friend of mine, who is a very good heli pilot, went right through the heli at the weekend. He set the heli up really well for me. After he had trimmed her up,he put 30% expo into the transmitter and handed her over to me. The old legs were shaking a bit but i brought her straight up into the hover,(i forgot how good that feels) and kept her there for a full tank. After landing,i had a break and during the afternoon, flew three more tanks, just hovering about but it really got me back into it.
I will keep you informed as to how it goes from here. |
