The 550 is a 600 with a short boom and blades...... Why not just do a 600 ?

Can you do 500 6s and 600 12s, share the same packs between them?

As I understand it the 550 is 6S and the 600 is 12S.

That is generally correct.

You might find more people that have gone from 500 to 550 in the 550 forum. I'm making some rather sweeping assumptions, but I think that most people get either a 500 or 550, and then make the jump to something bigger. Those that got a 500 jump to a 600, and those that got a 550 jump to a 700, mostly because they all share the same packs. Again, that is a very broad brush stroke, and many people will not go that route.

If you feel that they are too close in size, then get something bigger. I would suggest that you look at some of the "true" 500's: Goblin, X5, etc. If you're looking to stay at 6S, but want something bigger, then you can get a Goblin 570, stretched Synergy E5, or the aforementioned Trex 550 V3/L.

All depends on your crash funds and where you fly. I've owned my pro 500 for almost a year now. I wanted something a bit bigger and different but not interested in charging 12s at the field or buying all those batteries and lets not forget about blade cost.... Happy with a 500 size but wanting to actually swing 500mm not 425mm I went with a goblin 500. Won't be able to maiden it till late this week but so far on the bench it's noticeably larger and will make me very happy I'm sure. Won't know till she flys but it will have better power to weight ratio than a Rex 550. Seems to be one of the most complained things with the 550 is the power just isn't quite there. Watching Allen fly the latest 550L that thing is bog city even with his smooth style.

Fly what you can afford to crash and have room for your skill level essuntailly is the most popular reply you will get.

I'd wanted a larger helicopter for some time. I was looking at a Logo 600 and the Blade 550X when a great deal on a Goblin 700 fell into my lap.

8 months later: I really want the Goblin to be my main everyday helicopter but I just had my first $400 crash. It's quite a shock. 12S is kind of a pain. A set of Pulse 5000mAh packs is $280. The Glacier 3300mAh packs I use on my 500 are $70. I have a generator so I'm recharging at the field.

So my 500 gets more flight. I keep wondering if a Blade 550X might be big enough to perform well with a 6S 5000mAh. Then I could share packs between helis. I think sharing packs is underrated when making heli decisions.

I went from 600 to 500 and keep my 500s as my everyday fliers and still have my 3 600s as well but they don't see much air time

I am doing this.
The 500 uses a 6s 2700mah pack
The 600 uses 2x 6s 2700mah packs making it a 12s setup 510kv motor.

I sport fly.... But I know guys that run 6s 3000mah packs in there 500 ... I'm sure your could do 2x 6s 3000mah in the 600 as well.

I think anything larger in the 500 would be getting a little on the heavy side. But I'm sure there are people running larger battery than a 3000 6s in there 500's. I just think it would be on the heavy side that's all. Its up to you and how you like the helicopter to feel ? I know you can balance out the 500 and the 600 with 2700mah packs as I just started finishing up my rebuild on my 600.

I'm actually running 3300s in my 500. I will say the Glacier's I use are lighter than the Trunigy 3300 AND 3000 I have.

I went the ~550 way recently. X5 and stretched x4II swinging 515 520 blades and it feels just like a 550 with more power and with 6s. I still love the 500 size, just that I can't find anything attractive in the 500 size anymore. Maybe I get another x4ii

Interesting thread !

I went another way :
After flying for 1 year 250 and 450 sized helis, I wanted something bigger
The 600s and 700s with 2 batteries become expensive, also when crashing,
I thought a 500 would be a too little jump from 450, so I went for a T-Rex 550 DFC Pro (with the 600 boom and rotorhead and 550 blades) wich just needs one 6S battery.
It's a nice heli for "big air" flying and some basic 3D (loopings, barell rolls, stall turns, some inverted, etc...).
And I don't feel the need for something bigger with this one.
But 2 months ago a saw a T-Rex 500 DFC Pro for a nice price and couldn't resist.
The size fits well between the 450 and the 550, and to my surprise, it's a real pleasure to fly this bird, it's almost as smooth as the 550, and remains visible at a distance.
And these days it becomes more flight time than the 550 (again to my surprise !)

Default 500 -550

I went up from 500 to 550 just to see it better when its way out there ..the 550 is 15" tall and 43" long from the nose to the end of the tail boom ,,,,the 500 is 12 tall and 34 "long nose to tail ...the 550 is much bigger and easier to see ....both run 6s lipo;s 3000in the 500 and a 5000 in the 550 .....

Personally I find a 500 size helicopter, whether it swings 425 blades or 500 size blades perfect. Small enough to fly at an abandoned park or big enough to fly at the AMA fields. Personally mine fly's with 425mm blades and I love it. No plans to go bigger, however I nearly pulled the trigger a few nights ago on the Align 500L Dominator, but didn't. Have a feeling I will prior to the winter being over here in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Good luck! Some of my friends love the way the larger birds fly. I love the power to weight ratio in the 500 best myself.

I own 2_500 size helies one of them the new 500l. Also own 550 v3 dfc,600 dfc,700 dfc. I wouldn't Sell one of them, each one serves its purpose. A 500 u can pick up n fly almost anywhere but nothing beats the stability n power of a large heli with a good hs. Its always good to have a beater heli with alot of spare parts to really push the limits n get a little crazy. Just my opinion.

purchased a couple of the 550x kits a few weeks back, and then today bought some parts to switch my 550 3d to 500x with a 15% discount to boot.
