"B" PRO tail blade grip brgs!
Check your "B" tail blade grip bearings. Mine actually didn't feel to bad, but I was tearing them down for maintenance and found the roller bearings felt notchy and decided to replace them. One side came out ok, but the other side came apart on me and the outer races stayed inside the hub. Tried heating but to no avail. Usless now. Guess I'll have to order a new one and just put better bearings in it from the start.

I had the EXACT same thing happen a few weeks ago when I was tracking down a humming vibe in my 500....I decided to take the tail apart and recheck all the bearings, re grease and lube everything. One side came out fine, the other side just wouldnt come out...I tried all my usual tricks, it just wouldnt budge. I had to ditch the grip with the bearing race still inside it.. a waste of a Pro tail set.

Krauley-Thanks for the tip. I might as well give it a try. Don't have anything to lose. I would use an aftermarket brand rather than the Align brand.
+1 on the thrust bearings. Same, same as the 450 main blade grip thrust bearings.

Well....... both the inner and outer bearing races are stuck in one of my grips. Might be a little tricky getting solder into the outer race. I even tried a screw extractor, but it would hit the raised ring inside the grip and would not grip the bearing race.
If I decide to give it a try, I'll post results. Otherwise, waiting on payday for parts!

Have you tried heating it up and pulling or pushing on the race? This will usually get stuff out because the aluminum will expand and release some of the tension on the races. This is how we install and remove a lot of parts at work.

I stuck it in the oven for a half hour @ 350*? The race sits below the "raised ring" in the grip, so there's no way to tap it out from the opposite side. I might try the spiral type screw extractor and see if it will grip without tearing up the ring. Also tried filing a taper on a bolt, but I couldn't get the threads to bite on the race. I don't have a mini torch, but I've been wanting one, so I might hit Home Depot today. I do want to try the solder method. Any other ideas? What a waste to have to replace the whole tail grip assy because of the inability to get the old bearings out. I think what would work is a super mini slide hammer type of puller.....if I could find one that small.

I'm in the same boat....I have the whole Pro tail set sitting in a box until I figure a way to get that little sucker out...I ordered another Pro tail set. Mines stuck on the inner side...so the more I mess with it.. the bigger the chance of really scoring up the inner walls of the grip... I already have a pretty good scratch...I've pretty much called it lost.
One guy PM'd me saying his appeared to be loctited in as well from the factory. I'm gonna be upset if everytime I go to grease or replace these I wind up with this issue. Then again, I do still have about 6 or 7 sets of the old style ESP metal grips... they never gave me any problems.. even WITH the slop....

Yep, I had to install an old style ESP tail blade grip assy on mine as well. Is Align actually using loctite now?

I really dont think so.. I cant tell on mine....mine came from another member with the Pro tail already installed on it...when I switched it out after it got messed up, I didnt even want to try to see if the radials would come out of the new one.. I just checked them for notchyness and greased them up, and installed the new pro set. Like I said, I still have the other set in a box.. I'd like to see if I can get this out.. its a waste of a good Pro tail set.

+1 I had another thought of trying a tap on the race? If I can get it to bite into the race, then I can use my arbor press and mini torch and press it out from the other side? I'm not giving up yet!

LOL.. how compulsive are we anyway....For me right now, I really want to make sure I have a plan in place for the next time I am going to replace the radials on a Pro set up. After seeing how fast they got notchy, I may be checking these alittle more often. But, since I didnt do the initial install..its hard to tell what went on this last time..
Next time, I may just heat it up some before even trying to push the radials out....take no chances and soften up and expand the area so the bearings will come out easier.. I do this ALOT on the engines I've built and refurbished.
