What Pinion?

Hi,

has anyone experimented with differen pinions on the stock motor? Mine came with a 14 tooth pinion, and I'm thinking of osing a 15 or 16 tooh for higher headspeed.
But I'm a little concearned about bogging the motor. What Do you think?

I wouldnt suggest running woodies with anything over 15T though. You should consider investing in some 500 carbons if you want to improve headspeed & overall handling.

Hi Broke-again,

Waiting for CF blades here. But with the CF blades mounted on the stock head....what should be a safe max. rpm before having to upgrade to metal blade grips and so on?

Hi Maurice, For me personally, i always err on the side of caution when it comes to plastic grips. Although the stock grips do seem very strong & this is a pretty light heli, i still wouldnt want to run anything over 2k on them. Again this is only personal preferences as there is nothing stating what their safe max operating speeds are other than what the manufacturer designed them for e.g 16T max pinion on stock motor would give you approx 1800-2k depending on the efficiency of the motor you have.

I dont like running woodies over 1700 on this size of heli either and I put on metal grips when i calculated that my HS would exceed 1800. Didnt want to find out the hard way what their limits are!

I don't think the stock motor has enough power to spin the blades much faster with a bigger pinion. If you gear up it will bog when you do anything.

Hi,

I had changed to 15 teeth, but had no improvement. RPM only was higher at zero pitch, but went down, even when hovering. There was more boggingas expected; and the battreies were drained more quickly.

So I went back to the 14 tooth pinion.

I found that the carbons made a significant difference and running a short V curve in idle up helped with the bogging, but it didnt eliminate it. I also find it bogging slightly with the 550+ and thats a 1470kv so am going to play with the pitch curves.

I also have a Z20 980kv and will also be trying that motor when i get the time to switch over (im moving house this weekend).

RevCo is making a 68T .6M first reduction gear for the Hurcane 550. 68T in .6M is in between the stock 42 and 61T .8M gears that are currently available for the Huricane 550.

By making the gear .6M you will be able to use currently available pinions for the Lepton from RevCo and Hirobo to hit a wide variety of gear ratios.

How well will that gear mesh with the next .8 gear in the drive train?

Doesn't need to Bob... the motor pinion drives the gear that Adrian is making (hence you must use the 0.6 mod motor pinions), but its the smaller gear lower on the same shaft (with the one way in it) that meshes with the 61T on the main shaft.
