Default Trex 800 or Trex 700?

Hi guys,

i've been reading the forum for a long time but this is my first post with a not so quick question. I asume it's been detabed several times and its a very subjective question.

I currently fly a 450L and a 550L and i'm very pleased with both. I fly mostly sport and triying to get into 3D step by step.
Now i'm thinknig to get a bigger bird and here's my question.
Wich one is a better choice, a 700 DFC or a 800DFC?

I'm thinking specially on a crash and spares for 800 wich are way more expensive and harder to find than a 700 or am i extremely wrong? Main blades, main gears, tail boom, etc...

As i stated above, i'm mostly a sport / soft 3D flyer, of course trying to get into some more serious 3D so, wich one would you recommend me based on flight times and performance?
Carrying is not an issue, neither lipos. I have some good Ultra pulse 5000 mAh 35C ones.

Regards.

Have you considered a 700 conversion to 800?

nope, i havne't considered that.
So it's that easy to stretch a 700? Getting an 800 boom and bigger blades?

Regardless the stretching possibility, wich one would be a better choice.

Regards.

nope, never considered that. It only takes to buy an 800 boom and bigger blades?

I have a 700 that I stretched to an 800. There's pros and cons. 800's are an amazing large bird that is definitely fun to fly however the parts available are still becoming mainstream so they're limited. However most of the parts on an 800 are the same as a 700. The only difference really is the CF frame is taller and the boom is longer. Plus the 800 has 110/13 gear ratio for a bigger motor. Other than that all the components are the same. If u go for a 700 that would be a good choice as the blades are vast in selection. However u can get a trex 800 stretch kit for around $60 for the boom/TT/support brace/tail pushrod combo and the 780mm blades are around $150. So u can spend a little over $200 for an 800 upgrade and save yourself hundreds. However I would get thrusted bearing blocks and an adjustable motor mount as u will be playing with gear sizes to get maximum motor efficiency. Good to have thrusted blocks due to the axial loads on your main bearings and it will help keep them reliable. Also possibly look into rewinding your motor stator for more torque as larger blades take more power. 700's range around 1700-2100 rpms average and 800's range from 1500-2000 rpms. So lower headspeeds will require more motor torque or higher gearing ratio. I've done all the mods to mine and am totally happy. I got those upgrades along with better bearings. Bearimgs are vital as they are moving bigger parts around and u want total reliability when swinging a $2000 investment around. So don't limit yourself. Thus why thrusted bearing blocks are a must. Otherwise ull be replacing main bearings every 20 flights depending on weight. If u decide on this route and need some suggestions feel free to pm me

well thats very good info. Since it's only 200 bucks to stretch it to 800 size, then a smarter buy would be a 700.
I'm just tempted for the 800 due to size. It's a huge heli.

I think i'll go for the 700L Top and in the future, if i really want something bigger, i'll buy the stretch kit.

Thanks for all the input, now i have a clrearer view.

Regards.

800 has different rear end from the tail block back. Different frames, dfc links. Get a 700 imo

Also keep in mind you can not use 800 boom with 700 frame. It is thicker. You have to use boom from stretch kit.

780mm Align blades I got for $111 at rcpioneer from Taiwan.

Yes but u can just stick to the stretch boom and save money. Or get the boom mount block. Either way

I would say since it's your first go with a 700. I absolutely love my 700 pro. It's an animal yet graceful to fly. I just maiden ed my 770 which has a huge 14s power plant and it can't touch the snappy power of my 12s 700 currently. They are two diff beasts altogether. Both amazing in there respected classes. I have been around a lot of diff heli brands and I still say the Align 700 pro is worth every penny. I made my 700 a little bigger to by running radix v2 710 mains with rail 106's. Now they don't fit with the stock boom so I waited until I crashed then replaced the boom with the nitro 700 boom which is 10 mm longer which enables the safe use of the 710's. Otherwise the longer tail blades would hit the longer main blades in an aggressive maneuver. All in all I have nothing but great things to say about the 700.
For me the Align 800 was just too expensive and not diff enough from the 700 to warrant me buying it. That's why I went with the G770. Also my esc (Kcool200) just plain fits better in the G770 over the 800. So if your on the fence really go with the 700 you won't regret it

I think the 800DFC needs 14S at least to perform well. People I know with both (800DFC and 700DFC) tend to prefer the 700 overall (and some are selling their 800) because the 800DFC is underpowered stock (short flight times and/or not enough power). If you really want a 800, go for the logo 800 Extreme with a 14S powercombo.

well thats very nice comments.

Since you guys have a lot more experience than me, i'll go with a 700L top.

For sure i wont regret it, just wondering if the 800 could perform as good as the 700 and it probably does with some upgraded power plant.

Thanks a lot!!

I went through the same internal debate. I got the 700L top, it's pretty excellent. Definitely go for the top. Just for the esc upgrade alone.

Only thing I would like is if it came with the FL head upgrade and turnbuckles.

If you get DFC do not bother to change to new FBL. DFC works just great. It is not Goblin which at some RPMs generates vibes.

There is alot of great info in here but to keep it simple

700 is the best overall heli for everything

800 is great of cruzing sporting fly and hard 3D but you cant throw it around like a 700 it is huge

I had both 700 Pro (stock) and a Trekker 800 but with a 850mx/160HV (like the 800 Pro)
Flew them back to back.
Both with Align 5200 60C batts.
I am not a Pro pilot by any means but for me the 700 felt heavy and the 800 felt lighter.
I flew the 800 with Edge 813mm blades @2000hs. It was a rocket.
The 800 had a lot of Pop !

I sold both, but I miss the 800 the most.
Going to get another one.

I actually run the low end 700 DFC (with HV RJX servos) and consider my self a sport pilot (desiring to do 3D). With the 120 ESC I wish it was a 160 but I don't feel the 120 is inadequate, perhaps if your hard 3D pilot. It seems to handle my sloppy tic tocs.

Buying the low end and then just buying seperate HV servos saved me a few hundred bucks.
