I bought the Revell 1:48th scale Huey Hog model a couple of weeks ago, but just got serious about it tonight..
.

I trimmed out the fusalage pieces and started fitting them to the mcpx...

I also bought a second Mcpx today specifically for the project... didn't seem right to dismantle the one and only Mcpx I have and not be able to fly for a while!!!

tonight I fit the fusalage pieces, and the nose (which required a little sanding to fit them together correctly) and dremmeled the top to fit the main/swash/servo links correctly. Still deciding the best way to mount the body to the mcpx... have a few ideas, but I haven't settled on anything yet. I am debating whether or not to install lights... I don't plan to rush this -I have all winter!

worked a little more tonight on the Hog...

A fair amount of the top of the body has to be cut away with the dremel to fit the rotor parts through the top of the body... I plan to fabricate a new air intake vent raising it about 1/4" to clear the board. the side air filters from the kit will hide some of the cut outs as well.

removed the tail boom and did the final fitting of the mcpx in the Hog body. I used two screws through the bottom of the body into the landing gear holes on the mcpx frame to secure it... seems to be pretty sturdy. since it will need to be disassembled occasionally for repairs etc, I use the main blade from the model kit to fabricate a "tab" in the floor of the body... this serves two purposes; 1, to align the body halves and 2, to run screws threw the untabbed body side into the tab to secure the body halves together...

cut a notch out of the vertical stabe fin at the back to fit the tail motor mount and CA'd it to one half of the body, then using a fine tip grinding tip, made a "channel" for the tail wires... I suspect I will need to make some sort of reinforcement strap to go around the motor mount to strengthen it...

So thats it for tonight.

Next will be finalizing the plan to secure the two halves of the body together it can be dissassembled as needed, and wiring the tail motor.

yeah... the weight might end up being a problem... may have to break out the dremel after all is said and done... or upgrade the motor (or both!)

Did some work on the Hog today...

1. stripped a couple of wires out of a cat-5 cable to replace the tail wires and soldered them direct to the board (that was a PITA!).

2. Painted the whole bird with some flat OD green.

3. worked on the roof. I wanted it to be removable so that I could disassemble for maintenance as needed. I made four tabs, two for the back edge of the roof and one on each side just to the front of the doors. the tabs at the back edge slip under the body, and the tabs on the sides were drilled and will get a tiny screw (in the first pic you can see a scrap of wire temporalily holding it in place). This seems to work really good! I also attached the windshield to the roof; it comes off with the roof in one piece.

My plan is to make this a 1/9 Air Cav heli... I need some Army Cav insignia decals (crossed sabers) and "ARMY" for the tail boom.

4. DID A TEST HOVER!!!

and yes... it IS heavy!!! like a loaded down Hog ready for combat!!! but it did come of the ground. I reset my throttle and pitch curves to give almost max RPM prior to any + pitch and that seemed to help (not the lipo

). hovered around about 2 inches for almost 3 minutes.

5. Summary
I will need to do some dremel shaving inside the fusalage to drop some weight... there are plenty of places this can be accomplished. I still have to add the nose and doors, and as heavy as it flew, it will need to shed all the weight it can. thinking I may cut the "basket" of the tail motor mount as well. may need to upgrade to a BL motor before all is said and done. I am real happy with how it is turning out.
If and when I convert it to BL, I plan to bling out the hub, swash, blade grips and go with some black CF blades. If the BL conversion has enough "oomph" to fly it, I may add some lights.

Do you know what the flying weight is?Mine came out to 65g ,about 20 over stock.but with the C05 bl motor and nano 300 batts it flies great for about 4.30..Nice job btw...

no idea on the weight... I need to get a scale. I believe I am going to need to do the BL conversion though!

Did a little more work on the Hog last night...
My wife picked up some tiny little earth magnets at Radio Shack... 3/16" 2 in a pack.
I carved a little piece of balsa and CA'd the mags to it then to the inside of the boom... works like a charm! the body halves almost "snap" together. I stil need to "attach" the nose... planning to use the magnets there as well. (yeah I know, more weight!)
added a few decals... still working on getting the Army Air Cav crossed sabors logo for the nose...

Your welcome! Howver, I think I would epoxy the magnets in, rather than CA. Just a tiny dab of epoxy would be stronger than CA.

if they come loose I will epoxy. I can think of a bunch of uses for these little magnets! they are pretty powerful!

We like useing them for attaching wings, canopies, and sometimes battery covers on our model airplanes. Let us know how it holds up if you crash. Hopefully it will be a none event.
My guess is the magnets will keep it in place.

Now get that thing finished, painted and detailed! By the way, you gone brushless yet?
