Reseaching micro, inertia switch(transistor size) for auto on at 500 RPM and up and reset to off when rpm dies down. Will keep you posted.
Update: inertia switch was pricey. I am going with a simple mercury switch. Much cheaper. http://www.action-electronics.com/switches.htm#Mercury Last edited by chris6414; 05-04-2010 at 09:18 AM.. |

Just ordered all the supplies to make a set of blades... hopefully they work out as nice as everyone else's.

Good luck with the blades Chad. I was stationed down there 2 years ago at New River (MALS-29). Now up here at Willow Grove. Semper Fi!

Just an FYI
I purchased a complete DIY kit from Chance Medford AKA(XEROGEAR) at the Toledo Show. It came with all the required LEDs, Batteries, copper tape, and even a charge plug adapter. I didn't see them on his website last time I checked but if you give him a call I'm sure he'll send ya some. I won't quote a price because it may have been a show special but it was very inexpensive I thought. I am going to start on them today.
try www.xerogear.com for the phone number Phil

Very informative thread. I bought a set of Align night blades NIB off ebay and one blade isn't charging fully. Here's my plan.
1. I'm going to try the HK battery that was listed on here or just use some of the HK MCX batts I have and bypass the battery in the blade....basically light them like you do when you plug the charger in backwards. 2. I contacted Xerogear about this supposed DIY kit. I plan to make a couple blades with the HK Carbon fiber blades for my HK450 and their batteries. I will post my results. Now for some help. My LHS doesn't appear to have the heatshrink you guys are using. Can someone post the brand/part number? How do I tell if the blade is conductive? Are you just putting a voltmeter on it? |

Ah, great news. XeroGear list the kits on their website (Link).
I was about to give up as I could not find any suitable copper tape out there. I will also try to make a centrifugal switch on my blades, should not be too hard, and very cheap. Just a tiny conductive tube with a spring inside that will touch and close the circuit when the blades are spinning. The mercury idea would also work, but you have to store the blades at the right angle to keep the lights off. i.e. in the blade holder they would possibly be on (?) Check out This page for an example of centrifugal switch (The small brass tube soldered on to the pcb). Last edited by eppy; 07-13-2010 at 12:39 PM.. |

325mm shrink wrap?
Anyone have a link for clear shrink wrap for 325mm blades and 70mah lipo pack? I have everything but the lipos from hobbyking. Slow boat from china and all.
Earlier in the thread, someone said normal battery shrink wrap was too breakable. |

I have been using battery shrink wrap for 2 years on 600mm blades with a 200mAh battery with no issues.
I use the gray body molding mounting tape from the auto parts store to mount the cell to the blade.

Can't wait to try this...I have some align 600 mm that I'm gonna turn into night blades.

I have had a go at making some night blades. Thanks to all the contributors to this thread, I had no trouble setting them up. Two questions;
1.Is CA alone really going to hold these LED’s on? 2.I don’t have any large diameter heat shrink to hold my little 50mAh battery onto the blade at the moment. Will strapping tape do the job?

well , flew my 600 blades tonite, hehe , man nite blades are cooolllll!!
CA seems to be fine , and i seen some guy using gorilla tape, and im sure that good packaging tape with lenght fibers should be fine as a substitute. jsut balance them afterwards/make sure to.only takes a few minutes

Thanks for all the info. My night rig is excellent. vid in other post.
But now I ordered a few 1W Leds . Should be extremely bright and nice to fly with on a gray overcast day. |

Great work keeping track and documenting the DIY night blade thread. Took me a couple hours to really go over it. Prior to reading this thread, I set up a Trex 450 with a single Align driver and two glow wire strings. I bought a set if stock Align night blades and they failed to take a charge. I didn't try the "reverse the leads" for 5 minutes as Bob suggested to revive the blades, I just sent them back. The new set work fine and I'm pretty hooked on night flying now, even for an intermediate circuit flyer still looking forward to going into flight mode and 3D. I've also built a Gaui 550 and found no night blades available in the 475mm to 550mm range. Well, that's not entirely true, MS Composite had something but I'm gonna take a pass on that route.
So, I guess I'm obligated now, (since I'm informed ) to build blades for the Gaui. The 500mm CF blades, as you know, are not cheap so I'm going to be extra careful, like a good heli builder ought to. Maybe I do a set of woodies first. Hmmm. I've strung the Gaui with plenty of glowire and LED "pontoon" lights on the skids. That part came out great so here we go..... Take away message: It's thank to you all that I'm confident blazing ahead with the most important part of setting up the Gaui for night flight: LEDs on the blades. Looks very doable, I'll let you know how I do and post some pics. Thanks again for sharing the trials and tribulations of getting the parts and various methods of layout. |

well , ive redone blades changed lights etc etc etc , with no issues to the carbon where ive soldered parts together, no issues taking lights off and changing pattern either onto the same blades. i wouldnt worry to much about hurtin the blade itself, but the amount of burning fingers with the solder iron is high.LOL, ive used CA remover to loosen the glue and then wiped the area clean and rebuilt right over that same area without issue.
