This will not work properly as you may think. It will only work provided you wish to never deviate the camera gimbal more than about 30 degrees of tilt.

At this price, surely someone would have tried this out by now?

Since it is designed to work as an airplane stabilizer, why would gimbal lock be an issue?
Edited: sorry, messed up the link, here it is:

Think about it for a moment. If you tilt down 90 degrees the units roll axis would in effect be panning the gimbal where what would be needed is a pan servo correction.

The stabilizing unit does not "know" the orientation of the copter relative to the gimbal, thus can only really work when the copter and gimbal are 'aligned'. In short, useless unless you only want to look straight ahead.

Unless you use two of them, one stabilizing roll and pan, the other stabilizing tilt.
BUT. I don't think these are designed to slew, so wouldn't it always try to return to neutral after the correction is made? (on a setup w/ feedback pots, and it would drift on a setup w/out)

DJ, this thing is designed to fly and stabilize airplane. The gimbal lock condition you described would apply to airplane flight attitude as well right? If so, how is this thing able to stabilize an airplane? I just assume they had figured out how to deal with it.
