The new gear kit should have come with shims. If the gears are loose, put a shim between the tail rotor output shaft gear and the tail housing. Of course, I've never needed the shims, as everything was tight already. YMMV

OH, and did you check the forward bevel gears?

Also, did you put a brass ring (or heat shrink) on the gears to prevent the pin from being
thrown during flight? See image below.

Also, since we are on the topic of tails, did you upgrade to the stainless steel tail rotor hub with integrated male threads? PV0499 You REALLY need to if you have not! The Aluminum hub is prone to throwing blades, even if carefully assembled!

The brass rings are fabricated from hardware store thin wall 1/2 brass tube (Ace Hardware, over in the metal section, NOT plumbing pipe!!)

Cut to length with tubing cutter, then "sized" with a 10mm main shaft and a hammer. The pipe cutter rolls the ends in a little, the main shaft becomes an anvil and the hammering straightens out the rounded cut end. Also, the fit is just a friction fit, so you need to hammer it out for a perfect fit (easier to do, than to say) (A little CA or Epoxy won't hurt, but isn't neccisiary as once assembled the pins can't go anywhere)

PLEASE, do something about the pins. They will depart the airframe in flight if YOU don't do something about it! I also have a pretty good Idea what your thinking as you read this. "I assembled it properly, per the manual, and used loctite, they are fine" Sadly, you will find out that you are wrong (just like I did) it is only a matter of time until the pin comes loose and you experience the fun of "LTE" Loss of Tail Rotor Effectivness.

Yup, you need three rings,

  1. one ring for the tail housing bevel gear
  2. two rings for the front boom housing. (one ring on the bevel gear, the other on the straight gear)

Wink

I have now rectified this little issue.
I removed the 3 pins, applied loctite & replaced them, unfortunately I can't get to anywhere that sells the pipe, soooooo I hunted round the house and found some permanent markers.....(see where i'm going yet?), I removed the top off 1 & it was a perfect interference fit, so I cut it to size & glued it in place then used a stanley knife to apply a shamfer for a nice fit. This should work well as I presume if the pin does move it will not have enough inertia to punch through the plastic top. Lovely jubley
Thanks for the heads up on this.
While we're here can any1 tell me how far in the torque tube should go into the ends? mine only seem to go in about 8mm, is this ok?
