Default Last of the Diabolo S: #14

Because of the coming cold months and the delayed custom wound Pyro 850-500, I am going to take my time finishing & documenting the Diabolo S #14. I wanted to share the design that Gerd had made for the last Diabolo S.

Initially I requested that the orange of the Yellow Diabolo S be changed to red because I wanted the colors of the German flag. Gerd took the idea of German flag colors and messaged the classic Diabolo S scheme so the German flag theme is stronger. He also added the eagle from the beret insignia of a current German paratrooper of the Airborne Brigade, and the classic laurel wreath symbol of competition. The only additional request I had was to add the “14” somewhere (even on the inside) on the model so it could be counted as one of the 50 made. Adding the number on the outside was a challenge for Gerd, but I like how he pulled it off.

The model has a classic feel that will still look good displayed on the wall many decades to come. Thank you Gerd & the rest associated with Minicopter for a great helicopter.

For those interested in what is going onto #14 here is the list so far:

Main Blades: BeastX x713S
Tail Blades: Rail R-96 (undecided)
Receiver: Jeti Duplex EX R3/RSW
Flybarless Unit: Bavarian Demon 3SX
Motor ESC: Kontronik Cool Kosmik 200+ HV with fan
Motor: Kontronik Pyro 850-50 rewound with 1.9mm wire and ~500kV by Holger Lambertus
Cyclic Servos: Futaba BLS175SV
Tail Servo: Futaba BLS276SV
Kosmik Telemetry to Jeti DC-16: JLog 2.6 GW (LiPo VDC, LiPo mAh used, Motor amp, Motor watts, BEC VDC, BEC amp, BEC temp, ESC FET temp, Main rotor RPM, Throttle %)
Kosmik LiPo Cell monitoring: Kontronik Single Cell Governor
Kosmik Telemetry to Apple iPad: Kontronik Bluetooth Module
Jeti Telemetry to Jeti DC-16: Jeti MT125 EX (Inside fuselage ambient temp, Outside ambiant temp, LiPo 1&2 temp, BEC backup LiPo temp, Kosmik external temp, Servo 1,2,3,4 temp, Bearing block 1,2,3,4 temp, Tail-box temp), Jeti MT300 EX (motor stator temp), Jeti Muli 6S EX (LiPo cell monitoring {6 groups of cells with 2-3 cells to each group}), Jeti MGPS EX (GPS heading, Altitude, Longitude, Latitude, Ground Speed, Max Ground Speed, Date/Time)

As you can see Diabolo #14 is going to be custom wired as a test bed with very small gauge aircraft grade Teflon coated wire for the telemetry package. The Jeti DC-16 radio system can support 40 telemetry items with graphing & logging inside the transmitter. Each item also has a unique voice alarm. The data can also be downloaded to PC for analysis. The only thing left on my logging wish list is vibration analysis.

I'm looking forward to the build and hopefully competing at the 2015 IRCHA Speed Cup.

I agree totally, a piece of art. I'm already thinking I must buy a second fuselage just to keep the nerves in-check while flying it.

Gerd, you outdone yourself.

Very regal! Appears to follow on from the cop theme of I believe #99 except with more authority
Love the centre line in red. The dark blue on top and yellow underneath I think is perfect for visibility. There is a trade off however, between looks and visibility for the windscreen as I believe a solid colour will be more visible from afar.

it looks fantastic
for me it would be a bit too dark for large flight distances though..

What kind of batteries are u running?

The top is glossy black. My experience with doing speed runs the visibility of the top of the tailboom is the only critical part. I fly from what I can see of the rotor disk, and making sure that the tail is inline to the heading I want. I then watch the track of the heli, and adjust the bank to compensate. Tracking the heli is harder for the observer than the pilot because they don't have the control-expectation information that the pilot has.

I'm not getting any visual cues from the color on the heli. It is just the position of the tail in relation to the rotor disk. At distance my eyes see all colors as blackish against the sky background unless they are close to white (disappear) or florescant (glow if in sunshine).

Currently I use 6S Pulse 35C packs in my Goblin Speed trainer. I tried the 45C packs and they didn't give any more current than the 35C packs. For the Diabolo S I haven't decided what packs to use, the LiPo industry is too fluid to decide what I'm going to use for next summer. For over the winter I'm going to see if I can get 7S Optipower Ultras to fit. I really just want to test them out. I view LiPo batteries as solid fuel, to be consumed & replaced, not as an investment.

That is because it is fishing line! The photo is straight off the the camera other than resizing for Internet viewing.

Black = perfect. Top of tail = exactly.

Very true. Against any sort of cloud you're only seeing the silhouette and black is just as visible as yellow! Speed runs are a different sort of flight than 3D, more in common with planks IMHO. I think some sort of blade tip holo labels are the most useful vis tip as they highlight the rotor disc. At the turn in the speed runs I find muscle memory is doing more to coordinate than visual feedback clues and there is no doubt the thickness of the fuze over the tail is a big help.
