Default Co Pilot II install

First. I'm sorry if this is a repeat question. I could not find this in my search.

Back story:
I'm setting up a heli for my dad to learn on. He has his own 450 clone but I find it difficult to fly will the excessive slop in the head. I have buddy boxed with him a few times and he seems to do okay, but he smashes his heli often (when on his own) and it has been in pieces for months. I aquired a CP II system and plan to set it up on my align 450 pro FB so he has that extra safety net when I can't buddy box with him. I even got a dx6i so the radios are identical.

My question:
The heli (Trex 450 Pro FB) is currently setup in the radio (dx6i) and flys perfectly. I do have a tiny bit of subtrim programmed in. I don't remember if I have any trim (I don't think so). Is this okay?

Can anyone walk me through the setup process? I have printed the manual and maybe I'm just not getting it. What servo is servo 1, 2, 3, and 4? If you could baby me through the entire wiring and give any programming tips it would be greatly appreciated.

Also any tips on mounting the sensors? I do not have the original plastic mounting bracket for the tail boom and I don't think the wire will reach to my horizontal fin.

Thanks for any help.

Default A little more help please!!

I have question about the tail gyro gain with copilot ii

I'm setting this up on a dx6i (not my normal radio so this may add to my confusion). I have the gain on the gyro set up (in the gyro menu not travel adjust) to change from 64 to 59.5 when I change from regular to idle up.

I think I need to change this so it's on the gyro switch? Like if you have it setup for both rate mode and HH? Then the rate position would work as the off position for copilot?

Do I need to remove copilot and change my tail gyro settings, then plug it back in?

After everything is all setup is this the menu to adjust the copilot gain?

I have not completed the setup as I need to change my switch setup first

Thanks again

Ok it;s a bit early here but let me see if I understand....

On a 6 channel Rx, in order to have the On / Off function

You have your gyro gain lead installed into the SVO4 input of the CPII avionic computer.
And have the CPII On / Off lead installed into your Rx gyro gain channel. (GEAR)
You need to...
1) Set the gear travel points to 0 and 100
2) During quick set up of the CPII
A) Select the gyro gain option and set your "actual" gain value.. somewhere between 25 - 34
Your gyro gain will be a fixed value no matter what flight mode you select.
The On / Off function will operate from the gear switch.

If I am misunderstanding your question please let me know.

It looks like we are on the same page, and that is how I have copilot wired.

I guess I need to know, does the "actual" gain control the gain on the copilot system or the tail gyro?

"Actual" gain is for the tail gyro alone .
The CPII gains for cyclic are set with the hand held programmer.
Over all system sensitivity can be adjusted by the end point adjustment in your Tx for the channel used to control the On / Off function of the CPII

Things are becoming much more clear. Thank you so much for all of your help.

My last question for now is, why do I need to set the "actual" gain so low? Is it due to it being regulated through copilot? Will I still be in HH?

JR/Spektum uses a odd formula when calculating gain values...

They are usually between say 60 - 80% commonly 69 - 74 which equates to ~ 28 - 34%

Futaba on the other hand works on "actual" values say you set 30% it actually is 30%

Look here this should explain it better than I can...

Wow. I did not realize. That really clears things up.

So... Copilot uses "Actual" or "true" Gain NOT the gain values that spektrum uses.

Now I'm having issues with "gear/gyro setup..for DX6i set gear to gear" this is not an option in the gyro menu.. Does anybody know where in the DX6i I can find this option.

It's been a long while since I played with a DX6i

1) Set the gyro switch to gyro
2) Set gyro switch position 0 to 0% (CPII off) and Position 1 to 100%(CPII on)
3) Set travel adjust (gyro) to -100 / +100

That should do the trick

This also might help ....

Mr. Nightflyr, you are the man!!!

Please help with what I think is my one last issue. (I hope). My heli flys well and actual gain is about 30 for the tail, pitch is 70, and roll is 50. Stick priority is 150 (is this way too high?)

It just feels like I'm not using any stabilization. I turn on my radio, plug in heli (let it initialize), turn on copilot by the switch on the radio, turn it off, then back on (I was told you must do this, I don't know why). And it flys smooth but, it feels just like it did without it.

I did do the calibration before trying to fly...

Any suggestions?

Thanks again.

Experienced fliers tend to use higher figures like 150%.
Try 85% and work up from there.

I dialed down the stick priority to 85. And this made a huge difference.

I'm now trying to trim it out. During the pre-flight it says my auto trim is 0%. It won't let me increase this. How do I change this to the recommended 6%? Do I need to go through the quick setup again?

Preflight only tells you the settings you have, if you want auto trim you will need to go through quick setup, it may be configurable in preferences... never tried it there, but then again I always leave auto trim set at 0
