Default Dummies guide to...

I looked in the stickies and there's nothing there. I'm looking for a dummies guide to re-winding a motor. I'd like to read up on the theory behind it (wire size, kv calculations, amp ratings, watt ratings, etc...) Has anyone posted such a thread or knows where the best place I can find that info? I know I can google this but as we all know everyone on the Internet is an engineer, lol. Don't want to waste my time reading incorrect info.

Thanks!

Well, there are tons of info right here.
You just have to dig a little bit deeper. Nobody can do the home work for you.
It is a lot of reading involved.
If you have questions for a specific motor, then the headers in this motor winding forum are a good start.
If you have general questions, then your fellow pilots here will have answers for you.

Ok. How do I calculate kv? How don't know how many amps will my motor be able to handle and well as watts? How many volts? Etc...

There are several methods of calculation Kv.
One is dependent on the existing Kv, if you are going to rewind a motor.
New Kv = old Kv * (old # of turns / new # of turns)
Of course there is the question, if the manufacturer stated the Kv for this particular motor correctly and which brands of ESC he used for his determination.
The best method for an unknown motor is running the motor through a logger.

What determines kv?

well, at the most basic level, but ESC, and several other factors feed into this

+1

One word to start (Patience)

I am just started winding got A few HP03T under my belt. I would love to see some of other comparisons Like I found for the HP03T

Delta vs Wye realy has me dumbfounded!

I just tried to wind a HP05S no luck on that one. It had a pair so I tried 1 30g magnet wire.

Poles vs Magnets = ???

ESC Amps & Freewheeling = The hell if I know?

C Rating & S Battery's

RPM's, HS,

Kv = ?

I know they are listed in the wrong order. Thus having sticky would help. My head is already spinning.

As mentioned above, the number of turns for each phase.

Then the stator length, the magnet strength, the airgap, the number of magnets. That is just what comes to mind.

That is why I was surprised there was no sticky with links to general info posted on here, from trusted and verified sites that is.

Any formulas I can refer to? For example, how do I turn a motor that is lets say 600kv into a motor with only 400kv?

This formula mentioned earlier is a good start....

That tells me nothing. How many turns equal what kv? If I'm using thicker wire the effective amount of turns is reduced so does that automatically mean I'll never reach the same kv?

O.K. Example:
Motor has 600 Kv and 10 turns per phase.
Your target is 400 Kv.
New Kv: 600*(10/15) = 400

Kv is not dependent on wire thickness.

I have been reading threads and surfing the net I have found some info. I am not home at the moment. Maybe this thread could be a sticky if we can gather enough dummy proof info. I'm wondering what motor you would like to rewind.

A video of winding techniques would be helpful as these require long tapery fingers! As well as not shorting the phases out while making turns and crossing poles.

I'm just gathering info. I have no motor in mind at the moment. I'll probably play with a cheapo turnigy motor for now. Try and make it better. All this YY, YYY, XX and what not terminologies have my very confused. I have 2 of these motors at home I wouldn't mind getting more power out of (increasing kv as well). Motors look pretty decent but the windings look messy.Click image for larger version

There is some great stuff coming from this thread I am a sponge soaking it up!

I found this link I think this answers a lot of questions. Making sense of it is another story:

Franky, I would forget it . . .
Too much hassle and you would need at least two magnifying glasses in series . . .

The magnet wire is from Radio Shack. It is sold with 3 spools of different sizes 22, 26 and 30G. I used 30g with 7 to 8 turns in the Wye scheme. The original wiring is 12 turns of 32g if I remember correctly. I have the wiring scheme should you need it. As the post above mentioned it is difficult. If cash is not an issue sure get a new one and keep the old one it could come in handy. If you have patience and lack of cash it can be done!
