Yes and no ;-) (BTW - no idea how to resize images, so feel free to edit this post)

There is a need, as I think with any belt-driven tail, for grounding against static build-up. However this is already incorporated in the design. I hope it is ok for me to post two images from the construction manual:

First some of the annodization is filed off:

Then when the boom brackets are attached like so:

they act as the ground. This seems to work very well. So no need for additional soldering or anything.

There is a super detailed manual on their website, BUT it is in German only right now. I'm sure they are translating it ready for the first international deliveries.

just got the shipping notice from helix hobbies! Only have to wait for UPS to drive it across the country...

What motor are people planning to use? I can not decide if I want to use a pyro 700, or go for something more powerful.

Hey guys, I've pulled the trigger and ordered a Diablo.
I am thinking of putting in:
Pyro 700-52
BLS 256 (Tail)
BLS 255 (cyclic)
The spartan FBL controller when released.
Helijive 120HV and run the servos at 6V with the bec, OR
CC 160HV, Gryphon Quasar and run at 7.4v with a separate 3s lipo battery pack

Do you think its worth using a separate batt pack or is it OK to run off the main pack?
If the voltage gets low on the main pack will the helijive bec also cut off, stopping the servos or does it continue to provide power to the servos?
Being careful and using a timer and low voltage cut off, it should be OK with just the main pack?
I see the manufacturers for, Diablo, Goblin, TDR all seem to recommend running off the main pack.

What if any are the advantages of a LiFe battery?

Which main blades to use, Radix? and size

Thanks for any help you can give me and any advise on my set up would be gratefully received. This is my first 700 size build.

I use the Jlog2 in my diabolo. It is amazing, it logs just about everything important. So I know that my first flight had peaks of 5KW, 132A, the Powerjive had 65°C, and that the rotor rpm was 1750. What is also very useful is the PWM vs Throttle graph if you're using a Jive ESC.

Ok, so had the first flight a few hours ago. I have the powerjive 120 (helijive might be better though as there's a slow spoolup on a powerjive - so no practicing autos).

Most people on the german forums run it with a 12s lipo, which is what I do. I have a 5000 and a 5800 mAh pack.

I use Savöx 2271 and 2272 HV Servos which run straight off of a 2s 3300 mAh pack. The Jive BEC's are really good so using a separate battery is not really necessary and just adds weight. However I have had an ESC fail mid flight, leaving me with no control. Didn't want a repeat of that.

The Pyro 700-52 is definitely a good choice and has been used in the Diabolo before.

I hate timers as no 2 flights are the same, once you use more mAh the next time less. That is why I use the IISI module. It is fairly cheap and tells me exactly how much I have used up. I set it to beep (very loud!) at 25% remaining capacity which leaves me enough time to come in and land.

edit: I forgot: I use Radix 690 FBL, they work well but are hard to see as they're black. I've seen a Diabolo with Edge 713's and Edge Tailblades. That was very good looking.

Thanks for the help, has certainly given me food for thought. Never thought of a buffer pack. Looks really interesting. More to make my brain hurt.
I know this will seem a stupid question. When you say you run off a 2S pack do you just plug the pack into the receiver to power everything? Might it not be better to run a 3S lipo and regulate it at a constant 7.4 volts? I suppose using a 3300 mAh pack will allow you to run for a long time at 7.4 volts before it drops off so a 3S pack would be unnessary?

Sunnyville. How did you like the Diablo? Build quality, ease of setup and how did it fly. Meet with your expectations?

Well, this is my second heli, I started out on a Trex 450. I don't really do much 3D yet, more speeding across the field. Anyway, one thing that totally amazes me is how quiet this thing is. I am used to pilots flying 600/700 sized helis on the field, and their gears seamed to make much more noise. All you hear here is the noise coming from the rotorblades.
The heli is also very easy to make out in the sky, orientation-problems are a thing of the past now for me as I chose to get an orange cover rather than the white you see on their website.
As this was my first flight on a big heli, I was amazed at how easy it was. You don't really notice the weight - you can speed across the field with 1950rpm and 14° pitch (it can do way more than that, but I don't need all that much pitch) and then violently turn and come to a stop. Everything works smooth.
The Diabolo was also a blaze to build. Gerd over at Minicopter placed the manual online and online only (easier to update with new pics). It is full of detailed photos and instructions. I built the heli in a day, did the basic electric setup on the second and flew on the third.

So, needless to say I am blown away by this thing

Fantastic.
Hope Gerd sorts out a translation for the online manual in english. Google translate looses quite a bit.

tipped over on spoolup today - my fault (Microbeast tilted Swashplate right after initailizing, I didn't notice till after) - this heli is very crash resistant! As the tail boom is super thin, the blades that wacked it are still fine and good to be used again. Weirdly my aluminum skids got bent in the flip over. Who knows why. Anway, called Minicopter right after the crash, and replacement parts are on the way! Now that is amazing customer support! Maybe he's the European version of Chris Bergen, I hear great things about his customer support too!
