7HV one way bearing question
Im rebuilding a 7hv. When I pulled the main gear, I noticed the owb had a definite ratchet feel to it. It could be bearing notchiness, but it was so uniform it felt like it may have been intentional.
Do I need to buy a new owb? Or do they come new with a distinctive ratchet feel? Thanks!

Assuming it's properly lubed (I use Mobil1 5-30), it should be very smooth. Check your autorotation sleeve as well (part 09-7103). It should be smooth all the way around. If it isn't, you can try smoothing it up with some 800 grit sandpaper. Otherwise, it sounds like your OWB is not right and may need to be replaced.

I concur with Jay. Should be smooth.

Every 200-300 flights, but could go longer since it always looks good and clean.

I use Mobil 1 5-30 oil in my OWB's, tail slider, swash and mainshaft/swash area. I've got up to 700 flights on a OWB in one of my 7HV's (crashed at flight 700) and it looked great after that much use.
This is full synthetic oil that works amazing. I started running it in my competetion guns 10 years ago when traditional oils were burning off, gunking up and just not lubricating properly. Works great in very high heat as well as low temps. To keep the action speed up, I switch over to Mobil1 0-20 when I'm shooting extended periods below 30 F. At around $5/quart it's a bargain too.

Jmacky,
Is this the same as 5w-30 oil like you would put in a car or lawn mower. Thanks! D.W. |

Yes, This is a premium full synthetic oil marketed for cars and trucks but designed for the most abusive environments like racing and towing. This oil works exceptionally over a wider temperature range than conventional oils with higher protection against wear and less friction. It does a superior job of suspending particles of contamination and this is why oil change intervals in your car can be 2-5 times as long as compared to conventional oils. That's also why it works so well in my competition guns in harsh environments.
Man, they should pay me for that sales pitch

Honestly I found your posts on 5W-30 really informative.
I have been using triflow on everything till now and had never considered using an oil usually used in cars but it makes a lot of sense now that I think about it. Your success with it in competition shooting is I think the greatest sales pitch since, I am guessing, our helis are less picky about running perfectly smoothly. I might have to pick up a quart to try out. Thanks

I always use TriFlow or light oil, but synthetic automobile oil should work great.
Stay away from grease, as it tends to stick things together and cause premature failures in small ramp-roller clutches. I have not tried it, but I have also heard that ATF works very well. Nice recommendation, JMackey!

As a follow-up question, what about SAE30 or "2cycle" oil that you mix with gas for weedwackers? I ask because I already have some on the shelf vs buying a whole quart for what amounts to a 1/2 capfull at he most.
Thanks! D.W. |

I would stick with a full synthetic oil at the very least or it may attack plastics in your heli. I would not use the 2 cycle premix oil.
$5-6 / quart for Mobil 1 will do a superior job in this application and is really a bargain since it will last you a very long time lubing your heli and whatever else (guns ).

Gents,
How much lube should there be on the one-way bearing? I looked at mine and it definitely has some oil/grease in it, but just a thin layer. I seems smooth, should I add some more? Thanks! D.W. |

If you are in there for any reason already, flush it out with oil (Mobil1 5-30) a few times and put it back with what it will hold. Might as well do this if you have it apart.
To flush it out, I lube it up generously, put a mainshaft inside it and spin a few times, then blow it out with compressed air. Repeat this a few times then re-lube generously and put it back together.
