Default Gopro hero 3 and fpv

I have a go-pro hero 3 on my phantom along with my fpv camera. I see a cable I can buy to make my gopro fpv which would be great but I have a few questions I was wondering if a few of you that have it could answer for me.
Can you record video while you are using it for fpv or do you have to choose one or the other?
Does it just run off it's own battery if so how long does it last.
Any info you can give me or a thread that has already been started would be great.
Thanks

I flew fpv with my Hero 2. I had no issues. Some complain of a time lag, but I never experienced anything. You can fly fpv while recording. However if you lose camera power you lose video also. I switched to regular video camera after I put a gimbal on the GoPro. I found it harder to fly with the gimble correcting what I was viewing.

I fly FPV on my Phantom with a Hero 3 Black using a cable coming out of the USB port to a 1.3ghz video transmitter. No lag at all. One thing to be aware of is that the Black editions can lockup from time to time. I found with the later firmwares and not using wifi, the lockups are rare if ever anymore. You shouldn't be using wifi anyway if your flying a 2.4ghz radio. Part of my preflight is to make sure the blue wifi light is not blinking, since it's easy to inadvertantly hit or leave it on after making some settings adjustments with your phone app.

Thanks for the input guys, I think I'm going to stick with my separate fpv camera and have modified it to be light enough to be mounted on tarot gimbal. Now I can video exactly what I'm looking at through fpv without the chance loosing signal to fpv. I use a jeti DS16 2.4 transmitter so I don't dare use the wifi on gopro. Maybe some day I might just try the gopro but as a newbe to the fpv I will stick with both cameras for now.
Thanks again

Put a video switcher on so you can switch to the GoPro when you want to see what you're filming (maybe with a momentary switch on your radio). e.g. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s..._Switcher.html GoPro isn't reliable enough as a primary FPV camera.
