Tail rotor orientaion?
I would really like to put a turbine in a Vario early Hughes 500 snub nose with 4 bladed head and 'V' tail.
Problem is the tail is on the wrong side. I could probably get away with it on the 500E 'T' tail but not the early version. Is there any way of swapping the tail to the other side? Would swapping over and increasing the size of the blades be enough for scale application or is it just a non starter and think again. Ideas for a newbie please. |

Quick and dirty way is to flip the TR gearbox over, install the blades so you've got them in the proper orientation for direction of rotation. TR control rod will be on top of the boom and you can drive it with something like a Sullivan Golden Rod or fab a way to mount the pitch arm on the bottom.

Yep, that's what I thought about doing but will I get enough tail power with the blades not going up into the wash?

Not sure what main rotorwash has to do with giving the tail power?

Popular theory has that tail rotors are more effective with the forward advancing blade moving up into the downward rotor wash vs it moving down with the rotor wash.
This is probably more important at lower HS and lower tail rotor speeds on scale machines vs the blazing 2500 RPM and 10,000 Rpm tails on 3D machines.

I've flown models with the tails rotating in both directions. Honestly, I couldn't tell any difference in tail authority. Having said that, I'm the farthest thing from an aggressive pilot, especially by todays standards so my experience may not be typical but I tend to agree with Chris. Given the main and tail rotor speeds many are flying around with these days, it probably won't make any difference one way or the other.

When I put the Raptor 90 Mechanics in my Kavan Bell Jet Ranger, I had to flip the tail rotor to the other side and therefore it was no longer "up into the wash", flew great no issues whatsoever!
