Things To Get An Electric RC Helicopter Flying

1. Helicopter kit (most come with main and tail blades included)
2. Motor
3. ESC (electronic speed controller)
4. BEC (battery eliminator circuit - often integrated in the ESC for small helis) or regulator
3. Radio (most come with Receiver and Batteries for both)
4. Gyro (for tail rudder/servo) Some places offer a package deal...(gyro & high speed tail servo)
5. 3 swash servos and 1 rudder servo (if not bundled with gyro)
6. Main flight batteries (LiPo or LiFe) and possibly an Rx flight pack (NiCd or LiPo)
7. Charger and balancer for main flight batteries
8. Charger for Tx and Rx packs (could be the same one as (7))

Tools Needed for Assembly

1. Ball link pliers
2. Hex driver set (1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm hardened tips)...way easier than a set of allen keys.
3. High quality set of small ("jeweller's") screw drivers
4. Soldering iron (min 40W)
5. Pitch Guage (unless you can borrow a buddies for the time being).
6. Blade Balancer (unless you can borrow a buddies for the time being).
7. Blue Locktite
8. CA (Cyanocrylate) model glue...(pretty much super glue)
9. Small metric ruler. (comes in handy)
10. Some velcro patches and straps
11. Some high quality double-sided tape
12. Cable ties (small and medium)
13. Needle nose pliers and side-cutters

Optional Items

1. Tacho (eg SkyTach)
2. Power meter (eg WattsUp or Medusa) or FDR (flight data recorder) (eg BNR
DPR-100 or EagleTree MicroPower V2)
3. IR temp gun (for checking motor/ESC/battery temperatures)

Hey this may be a stupid question, can I use a cordless drill to start my nitro engine? I have an 18v Makita LIion cordless drill and I just saw an app where you can buy an adaptor for one of the starters that will allow you to use the 18 volt makita battery on it, so I thought how about just using the drill? I am obviously still new to nitros and in the process of building a Trex 600 pro, just waiting for the next set of videos from Finless. Any answers are appreciated.

if you looking for a 50 for your first heli dont get a raptor go and get a align t-rex 600 n, the price of the parts are stupidly cheap compared to the raptors. plus it looks a hell of alot better

No reason to say that it wouldnt work, just make sure you set the drill to go as fast as it can, just to give you a better chance of starting it.....

I have a 19.2 volt craftsman that I use to start my 30 Raptor. Works fine....An added note, when trying to start your engine, hold a finger over the exhaust for a second or two...It will start right up. The added backpressure will send fuel to the carb much quicker.....

Probably the most important thing,

A seperate bank account(that wife/gf/parents aren't aware of). Allocate 5% of your paycheck to it each week via direct deposit so that when you ball the heli up, you will have the money to fix it

Look here to see what it has cost me to own/fly my E-flite Blade CP Pro.

I've put about another $25 into since I tallied it all up

But, now that I'm doing more flying than crashing it should be a bit cheaper of a hobby...I do need to get an extra battery or two though since flying without crashing means one battery is no longer enough.

If you haven't tried it yet, there's an optional Sub-Micro G90 Heading Lock Gyro
(E-flite part #EFLRG90HL) that runs off the 5th channel. It's supposed to really take charge of the tail for you and keep your heading true. I haven't tried one though, so I can't say how well they work...but, most people in the hobby seem to agree that they're a good idea.

I have a blade cp and i have found it very hard to fly i changed the tail servo to a hitec hs 45 carbon gear servo and it inproved my heading hold without changing the giro and now much easer to fly.

What simulator do you recommend

FMS is a great *FREE* simulator...with many plane, heli, and other models to download from all over the Internet. I've got other some simulator info on my blog.

I'm thinking of getting a .30 size heli... I have a Honeybee CP2. I'm thinking of a venture 30, I found one on ebay that I can hopefully get for a decent price. It's the ready-to-fly kit with a XP6102 radio and G410T gyro. It also has a Webra .35 motor with the muffler... It's all new in the box. what do you guys think?

The advice is normally go with a 50. Same sized heli, slightly longer blades, more power.

Otherwise you will be looking into upgrading your 30 into a 50 and have stuff that no one wants.

Other than that, sounds OK, but check the JR (I think it is a JR) section about info on the Venture.

I have always wanted to get into Helicopters but not sure which way to go.
I decided to go with electric, 500 size, and built the kit as suggested.
So far so good, I bought an HDX500SAS from Helidirect through an ebay auction.
The kit went together like a glove. No problems atoll. I replaced my old radio with
a Futaba 6EXP Programmable radio, 4 new Futaba ST servos, and a Futaba 401.
This is my second heli, the 1st being a Blade CP Pro. This is much easier to
control then the Blade, It allows me to enjoy the heli and not to be as nervious.

ive only built the trex450, but i found that a digital caliper was absolutely invaluable. also the bubble levels that finless uses in his video about setting up ccpm. and the trueblood engineering swash leveling tool made setup a breeze.

and for setting up a nitro, will i need a hipoint balancer and a dial indicator?
