Default Robird and X-Bus...

Robird development got as far as S-Bus support, but never X-Bus. This was, IMHO, the last thing that was really lacking in it.

Recently, JR Americas began advertising a protocol convertor to change from X-Bus to S-Bus (or vice-versa) call the "SXD Universal Serial Bus Adapter."

While I think that this is really intended for those purchasing drones which have S-Bus equipped electronics/gyros, I do intend to test one with the Robird (set for S-Bus) to see what the result is.

I have one here for testing and will report back as soon as I have any useful information.

I connected the JR Protocol converter between the X-Bus port on the receiver and the Robird this evening.

I had to reverse the directions of all of the channels in the Robird, and increase the endpoints as well (in PPM mode the end points were all at about 104% in the 28X, with the Protocol Converter I had to increase them all to roughly 117% in order to maintain 100% travel in the Robird program.

The servos are responding a great deal quicker than previously. I assume this is due to the serial data connection between the DMSS receiver and the Robird.

Other than these two items, nothing else seems to have changed. I will be going completely through my Robird setup and doing a lot of testing prior to test flying.

I am installing a new ESC at the same time, so it will probably be next week before I can do the actual test flight.

The machine is done.

I had to adjust the setup slightly-I got 7 degrees where I got 8 before on the Cyclic Pitch Geometry tab. I also increased the endpoints on the Tail Rotor slightly in the Tail and Cyclic Limit Tab.

I hope to test fly it in the next few days.

That was my major complaint about newer JR products. Most 3rd parties don't really support DMSS or XBUS natively. It was enough to make me sell my XG11 last week to switch to vcontrol. Maybe a little bit of an over reaction, but I'm not regretting it.

okcomputer,

It was nice that JR came out with the Protocol Converter to allow use of third party, aftermarket devices who don't off X-Bus compatibility (fortunately most of the newer FBL units seem to have corrected this).

Sorry you sold your XG11, sir. V-Bar does support X-Bus (I presently have V-Bars using X-Bus working with my 28X, and have used V-Bars with X-Bus with my XG14 previously), so you could have kept your XG11 and used it with your V-Bars with no problem.

At the moment, I fly four different FBL units right now, so V-Bar control does not work for me (everyone's needs are different). I want to continue to keep my options open for FBL units going forward (I have not yet tried Skookum, Spartan, or Spirit).

I actually put the helicopter in the car and drove to the field, only to find it closed for an event, so I won't be able to test fly until, at the earliest, tomorrow.

I am very curious about Skookam. Wonder if they would send me a demo unit.

Something that I thought I included above, but neglected to...

I powered the Tail Rotor Bus in the Robird by taking one of the male-to-male connector. removing the signal (white) lead, then connecting it from an open channel on the receiver to the SRX2/Rud port on the Robird.

I put five flights on the Atom 550 today with the Robird and the JR Protocol Converter! I had a blast-the machine felt more responsive and more connected than ever. I did have to increase the gains a bit both on cyclic and rudder. I can see more of these JR SXD Adapters in my future!

I think I need to find another Robird. I plan on building a couple small-ish helis over the winter. I kind of miss flying the Robirds.

Good to see that the SXD adapters will definitely work for this unit!

I picked up a few more SXD Adapters.

The 6HV-U will get modified to X-Bus first, then the Chronos.

When the eXo gets here, it will be set up with the SXD/Robird/X-Bus from the start.
